Laptop Screen Problem - Can you help? also any info on returns to currys?

I have had the Laptop for around 3 months and i brought it from Curry's

The problem happens when i play a DVD or use full screen and thats where is all goes wrong

I am goggling an image of a similar screen problem but basically the screen is full of moving lines (live an un-tuned TV - Hazy) and this makes the laptop unusable.

Does anyone know to cause of the problem and a possible Fix.

Or

If i return it would i be able to ask for voucher/ Credit note?

have you tried using other players to play the dvd?
does it do the same if you play an .avi (or other video file) in full screen mode?

yeah .AVI's and YouTube

So video files from both the internet and *Cough torrents lol

hmm... have you tried reinstalling the graphics card driver?

no but do you know the best website to get drivers? apart from the manufacturers website?

I've just always used the manufacturers website, what card have you got?

If you possibly find XP drivers for that card you would be classed as a god in my eyes

someone else (more computer literate than me) maybe able to help you out, my experience of returning things to curry's/comet (cant really remember which one) isn't brilliant, i had a problem with my dvd burner on a laptop and i knew it could't be fixed cause the it guy at work had researched the (apparently really common) problem. but they sent it away to get fixed, and i had to wait to get a new one. if it cant be fixed you'll get a new one or if they no longer stock it a credit note (i think, this is only from my experience).

so you might as well try all the advise you get cause more than likely this when its away for repair they'll try the same things. you might as well be sure its broke before they take ages to fix, what could be an easy fault. does that make any sense, its still early.

edit: upon looking at the time its not still early, i'm just tired

If you can remember an exact date then you could do a system restore back to that date and fix it. Problems like this occur due to codec related problems, some programs such as media players and DVD player software install codecs, conflicts can happen between these codecs resulting in what your saying (its hard to diagnose without a picture of it though).

Un-installing the offending software should fix it. Just try to work out what you changed most recently, what you installed etc and remove it.

If the problem is related to the codec's, that means it is a software related problem and as such it cannot be fixed under-warranty without you paying through the nose. It should be an easy fix really.

Yeah i understand what your saying but i have only had the laptop for around 3-4 months and i kind of wanted something more reliable and something to last me a year or two.

I will try the advise you given above but since the problem started about a week ago its happened around 6 times :x

I also get no incompatibility issue warning when i Close/open the lid

Well i updated the Graphic card driver around 2 months ago and it was working fine and that was the only recent update installed.

BTW would a auto-update for the sound effect the video card?

I am talking about programs you have installed rather than updates the computer has made. What program's do you have installed that you use for watching media files (avi etc)?

I use VideoLAN for watching AVI's

Thats mainly the one i have used because i have done for years and maybe Windows Media Player 11 once or twice

Try re-installing VLAN, remove it and get the latest version and see what happens. Also what operating system are you running on?

Ok will do it tonight when i get home from work

If I knew your operating system I can tell you which codec packs to download. Like an all-in-one installer for most codecs, that may also fix the problem.

thats exactly what i was thinking but i am willing to try anything

But i really feel uncomfortable keep the laptop to be honest

I will try and take a picture today if it happens tonight but its quite frighting to think that i spent £500 on a laptop only for it to start playing up 3-4 months down the line

I was going to install XP on it because of the problem but couldn't get a hold of some of the drivers :thumbsup:

I personally use this codec pack with Vista:

It is not that VLC is having the issue, but rather something else is conflicting with it. It is easier to re-install VLC than to find the other offending program, re-installing could force it to override any settings another piece of software has set to change VLC's operating set-up.

Codec problems are very common, doesn't matter what software your using.

Also i would like to give you guys as much information as possible.

when the Screen going off on one. the Laptop seems to crash Crlt+Alt+Del doesn't respond and no key in put works

On Vista it would, it may behave differently on XP though.

Like I said earlier it is hard to be 100% sure without an image of what is happening. You said that this only occurs when your playing media though, flash, avi and so on. This makes it sounds like a codec problem as I have suffered from it in the past.

Its a refresh rate (Hz) issue for sure, there is a setting on video playback or similiar in the Nvidia or the codecs drivers, the refresh rate is set too high. Anyone can try see and for themselves if you set your refesh rate too high you'll get lots of lines across the screen.

1. If its not the Nvidia drivers check the codecs if unsure uninstall your codecs and install this pack to make things easier:-

As Guerilla mentioned at the start of the thread. updating the display drivers of the graphics card is a must. You should do this first, if you have problems still then you can start looking into the codec problem.

Basically making sure Windows Media Player is up to date and removing other software that installs codecs, such as Video Lan, DivX Player, Nero etc. Then see what happens when you try to play an AVI. Re-install the software as you need or a codec pack.

Aaah seen. Thats hopefully a corrupt driver or codec which will mean uninstall all gfx drivers and codecs and clean then re-install last working driver. If the issue still persists it could be that the gfx card chipset has fried.
