You have to hand it at the counter so they can record what, where when and how you sent it.

If you are intending to send it recorded you may as well go to the post office. In theory as long as the correct value for the size and weight is on there it shouldn't be a problem, but as you have to go into the PO for the recorded delivery anyway it confuses the staff in the PO to put the full value on the parcel using stamps. i did it once and the member of staff had a right cob on her because she said it wasn't the best way for them (I was under the illusion i was the customer so it shouldn't matter what was best for them....silly me)

ive got a lot of stamps to use up so i want to get rid of them this way,i dont want to pay for it at the counter as ive already spent money on the stamps,i wanted to check if anybody thought this was likely to cause a problem when i get in there,

yes but can i just hand the parcel over with the stamps on it and say i want this sent recorded and they give me a receipt?

Size and weight matters. The post office would want to weigh the parcel first to see the proper postage cost.

If you are asking if you can use your own stamps when you hand it over then the answer is yes, but they will have to get all the details etc before deciding the cost, then you can hand the stamps over.

after they have done that,as 4 large letter stamps is over the value of the parcel including recorded i assume they just give me a receipt after they weigh it

As long as it to the correct value they will not mind, mine can be a bit funny if you have already stamped it and they take great pleasure in telling you it's wrong when it is.
