'Large' man removed from flight to see dying aunt

A man who wanted to fly to Canada to see his dying aunt says he was taken off the plane because he was too large.

Sandy Russell, from Wolverhampton, who weighs 32 stone, was asked to leave the Air Transat flight to Toronto because the arm-rest would not go down.

He was told he could travel on the next available flight from Gatwick but would have to pay for two seats.

Mr Russell did not travel and his aunt died two days later. Air Transat said he took up a third of the next seat.

My opinion - it's a shame but surely if you're going to take up two seats, you need to pay for two seats.

Seats are too small

Tough ... think of that poor lady next to him. I'd be ****** if I'd paid for that seat next to him.
#8
I feel sorry for him but, if it was a third of my seat I had paid for I would want him off my seat, time to go on a diet me thinks

I did kinda, cause of the dead aunt.

But he didn't buy two seats and tried to be cheeky by chancing that he would get an extra seat for free. When he didn't he made out like he was a victim.

Sorry mate but if you need two seats then you buy two seats. You can't just ruin someone else's flight because you think you're special.

sounds about right to me.

about time they started charging lardies extra. Beats me how they want £5 per kg for excess luggage yet 20-30 stone people pay the same as 7-8 stone people!

Just wear big clothes and stuff your luggage inside them

If he needed two seats he has to pay for 2 seats. However if he does pay for both he should get both and the advantages of having two seats.

LOL - I recall watching one of these crappy airport tv shows a few years back and some bloke did exactly this when they wanted excess. He was ranting about him only weighing 12 stone yet loads of lardies were not getting charged excess and he was.

He then put on about 10 layers of clothes from his case to remove the excess. It was well funny as he looked like the Michelin man at the end

I have had a friend do that and the person at security laughed at him so much, he put on 4 coats.

When I went traveling around Europe as I bought more stuff I had to wear more so my backpack wouldn't be overweight coming out of the airplane in an athens heatwave with 5layers and hiking boots was not a nice experience my gf almost passed out she was so hot!

There's an idea, I only weigh 7 stone, I should be able to take a few kilos stuffed inside clothes!

I hate how the papers felt the need to bring up he was going to see his dying aunt. Why do they feel the need pull the sob story.

Yeah but can he insist on the two seats being together?

well.. partly attention grabbing.. but then again.. I wont be surprised that the guy brought it up himself.. :?

I hate it when really tall people sit behind me and keep kicking the back of my seat. They should have to buy 2 seats - theirs and the one in front.

And people with kids; I hate them too. Put them on a separate plane.

It's called journalism, to cause a debate, like this thread!

I had one obese guy sat by me on a flight the once removed from his seat mid flight as he was in the exit row alongside me and had to use a seatbelt extension and apparantly it was against the rule of the exit row for some reason, I was relieved of this as he was replaced with a svelt person instead, I am not exactly skinny myself but to have someones extra body weight encroach on your seat is not a pleasant experience, especially in an exit row where seats tend to be slightly narrower. It makes you feel extrememly claustrophobic and is never nice having a stranger invade your personal space.

Lol....with all that said, it might just be easier for the airlines to have less passengers with far more space between the seats and a seperate lockup area with duct tape to shut up rug rats :-D

OP, instead of starting threads about it on a shopping forum, and wanting to make him pay for two seats, do you not want to find out WHY he is so large and hopefully stop this happening in the future? Was he born fat? ;-)

This also happen to Kevin Smith I believe. To be honest if you can't seat in one and have two sit in two seats you should pay for the extra seat.
