As title says..

Is it legal or not to overtake a cyclist at a pedestrian crossing ??

highway code states

191

You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving vehicle nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

Question then is ...
A Bike is, or is not a vehicle ??

Long running debate here lol

Provided the cyclist has not stopped to allow someone to cross, then yes you can pass them. This is because they are travelling at slow speed ( less than 5 mph ) which is also in the highway code and restrictions such as double white lines etc do not apply.

+1.

It can't be a requirement to slow down to a walking pace at the approach to a pedestrian crossing to pass a cyclist. The prohibition is based on the fact that the pedestrian must be able to see all the vehicles approaching the crossing, and if you're overtaking a vehicle (not a bicycle) you might be out of sight-line.

You will no doubt have some idiot policeman with a very low IQ who will try it on, but it wouldn't make it to prosecution.

You'll be one of the fools that I make no effort to avoid then, manoeouvering around cars at a junction sums up the idiots who ride pedal cycles. Unless of course they are merrily riding along the pavement as most do reaking havoc with the pedestrians in any case.

where did he said he manoeouvers around cars, he said he gets into a better position, i would imagine he means middle of the road so he doesn't get cut up by a car

Isn't that typical? Since when does 'being overtaken by' equate with 'being cut up by'? Answer, when you're an idiot cyclist.

lol idiot, obviously too fat to own a bicycle then? :whistling:

If a cyclist is turning right and indicates right a car will overtake if the cyclist isn't positioned in the middle of the road. This equates to being cut up.

If a cyclist is going straight on past a left turn, a car will try to overtake and turn left cutting the cyclist up

Both these have happened to me

Okay we are getting a bit off track here.

The 10 mph overtaking rule rule is ( rule 129 )

all about straddling double white lines, slower moving vehicles, it is not in the pedestrian crossing as an excuse to overtake.

I still maintain it is at the very least dangerous to overtake a cyclist at a pedestrian crossing.

Also the rule is there and you cannot exactly use other rules to amend it.

Rule 191

You MUST NOT park on a crossing or in the area covered by the zig-zag lines. You MUST NOT overtake the moving ( vehicle ) nearest the crossing or the vehicle nearest the crossing which has stopped to give way to pedestrians.

Dictionary definition: VEHICLE
any device or contrivance for carrying or conveying persons or objects, esp. over land or in space, as an automobile, bicycle, sled, or spacecraft.

you'll be the type of motorist who think they own the road. i dont move around cars, rather drift right when approaching a junction so i have room to cross it safely rather than have a car squeeze me over because im a 'fool??'

a cyclist should be given the same room as a car when overtaking, though it seems when a driver like you passes me i get far less room than i should. safe?? no. idiot driver.

Not so much too fat to ride a bicycle, but too interested in self preservation. And anyway, saddle soreness was never a substitute for airconditioning, leather seats, a 4 litlre supercharged engine and complete insulation from outside noise .. oh, and cyclists. :-D

But to your point about cutting up ... the desire to turn left or right has nothing to do with the approach pedestrian crossings. If an idiot cyclist moves into the middle of the road deliberately blocking the passage of a motor vehicle just because he doesn't want to be overtaken, then he really and truly deserves every broken bone in his body that results as a consequence.

And the same goes for approaches to turnings. If the cyclist deliberately hogs the middle of the road before turning right or left because he is afraid that motorized vehicle will move around him, then he's precipitating an incident, the cause of which will be entirely his.

Because I swear before God, that if a cyclist does that to me, I will make it my business to pass him, whatever the risk to himself. And that's the reason for the number of fatalities amongst the cycling community. Almost all of them are caused by their dangerous and provocative behaviour. And don't get me started about they contempt with which they treat traffic lights that are at red.

I speak as someone who has been driving on London's roads for nearly half a century. It's no surprise that cyclists are roundly hated, no, loathed .. by almost all drivers in London.

Rant over. I'm going to lie down in a darkened room and dream of Ferraris.

The latter happens to me on a regular basis as I head home from work. If I wanted to turn LEFT, I would signal that intent. DO NOT assume I'm turning left, then try and kill me, then look at me as if I'm the one in the wrong!

Before you start kidding yourself on that you know anything about cycling and trying to mock real cyclist who knows the rules of the road, can you at least read up on what Primary and Secondary positioning means? Otherwise you'll just look as stupid as you do now.

Love the fact you think you're high and mighty because your fat **** is sitting in a car. You might find that most deaths are caused by idiots like you that ignore the fact that bikes are classified as road vehicles and have as much right to be there as you do.

And to say that you would deliberatly pass a cyclist even if its dangerously and can cause them great harm......Well it sums you up as person really doesnt it?

How would you feel if I said if you were overtaking a cyclist, I would want you to crash and die? Not nice is it? Idiot!"

Have your fat ass ever riden a bike? You might find that most cyclist cycle to the left of the road and that most accidents involving cyclist is when cars overtake them and cut them up when they try to turn left. Therefore the problem is caused by the driver of the car.

The right thing to do is wait until the cyclist pass as you would with any vehicle then you go.

Oh and next time your driving, I hope you crash, your car turns into a fireball and you die.

Because that is the right thing to say isn't it?
