Having just read high society by Ben Elton am interested to hear people's opinions.

In the book one of the characters, an MP, is proposing to legalise all drugs.

Pro

Can be taxed, with the money pumped into rehabilitation
Control over what goes 'into' them
Safe centres can be made for people to use them 'safely'
Reduce the crime fueled by drug users/pushers

Con

More people might become addicted

Now i don't think any government would ever pass such a law, but would be interesting to get peoples opinions, this thread is intended for discussion, 'no hate' (god i hate that but can't think of another way to put it!!)

Oh, and i don't, never have and never will take any illegal drugs

Great Idea and will work. No mugging or crime for a fix as it will be cheaper; Drug sellers with nothing to sell so no crime and chuck in Brothels and its job done!
#7
I definitely think Brothels should be legal, create a safe working environment, the book does touch on that too.

Good read

Done this thread before - they get boring because no-one who is opposed to such an idea can put together an intelligent argument (I like to think out of choice) so they degenerate quickly.

Cool, hadn't realised it had been discussed before, i suppose pretty much everything has :-D

Was interested to hear the argument against, could you humour me and make one up :)

Yes they should totally be legalised (tho there should still be restrictions, age limits etc. and there are some drugs that can be crazy dangerous) but it would remove almost all the danger currently assosiated with drugs, and destroy a huge criminal enterprise. Almost every death related to heroin for instance is due to problems with the quality of the heroin, or of the illegal nature of how it was obtained and the people the user had to be involved with or from having to share needles and other unclean practices. There are experts that believe heroin related deaths would drop almost to zero if it was legal and well controlled.
