Legit XP key but no disc - can I use it?

I was given a computer by a friend with an XP professional licence / cert of authenticity but he doesn't have the disc. Can I install any copy of XP professional and use the legit key or would I need the actual disc he used to have?

Where would I get a copy of a disc that would work?

Thanks

Pete

You need an XP OEM Disc as it will be an OEM key, but apart from that, yeah you can use it as an OEM license has to stay with the computer.#

Edit: hang on do you mean the license you have is a sticker stuck to the machine ? if so the above applies

It will work assuming it's the same volume licence. You can't use a Professional key on say Professional Corp (i.e. non-legit releases).

If yours is a store bought XP disc identical to his then sure.

If yours isn't and is Pro Corp, just sort him out with a nice legitcheckcontrol.dll and everyone's happy.

If it has already been installed on another computer and the licence is only for one then you wont be able to use it once you activate it. There are ways round this though.

If he is no longer using the copy can I reactivate it legally on this PC by calling MS?
There is a label on the PC I'm going to check what it says but I don't think it says OEM- back in 5 mins

You'll be able to install it alright with the key but once it comes to activation you are given a code to enter and if the licence you hold is registered on the database and the specification of your pc differs to the one it was on originally access will be blocked. Worth a try, if it doesn't work, install a hack.

With you having the COA on the PC the copy now legally belongs to you anyway. It shouldn't be used on another machine. If it doesn't activate online just ring microsoft and they should activate it for you no problrms. Retail copies belong to the user,OEM to the machine and they can only be used on that machine. The COA is the important part not the CD.

I'm installing on the same machine (motherboard). The certificate of authenticity sticker on the pc doesn't mention oem. It says:
Windows Xp Professional 1-2CPU
FujitsuSiemensComputers

Will this be OEM?

Where can I get an install disc?

Have you ever tried that? I've only ever heard horror stories of people calling microsoft.
