I got this in an email today and thought some of you might like it too...

This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. I have no way of knowing who sent it, but there is a kind soul working in the postal system.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her.She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her. You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith.

-----------------
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey !nd Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith,' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called,'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
--------------

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven.

Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I am wherever there is love.

Love,
God

Sweet, but I hope Merdith's parents will explain to her when she is a little older that the incident was a fairytale and and the notion of a god is a human myth. The greatest present you can give a child is the truth. I agree that there are times when you hide the truth from children to help their simple and innocent minds make sense of the complex business of life and death. But you mustn't forget to return to the truth; otherwise you do them a great disservice.

What a lovely story ............... has made my night !

So lovely. Made me feel quite emotional. Restored my faith in human nature.

A wise Elder once told me that when tiny babies are sleeping and they made faces they are playing with the angels. Thought that was lovely too, especially when I watched my daughter sleep.

Goes without saying really since I said it! ;-)

on the other hand. their postal service can get a letter to heaven and back!!!

obviously not the uk postal service
usually they cant get a birthday card delivered a mile away from the sorting office

think they use the same method as a soul gets to heaven.... a wing and a prayer

very touching story tho

Which part exactly do you disagree with? That we shouldn't tell children the truth, maybe? :whistling:

Education is never pointless stora. But yes, it probably is for those who prefer to settle on belief over evidence and knowledge of their world. But I'll zip up now. The itch has suddenly dissipated. You've burst my balloon

All this money I've spent on education to improve my knowledge of science. If only I'd known that just being a Christian would give it to me! The bummer is that I was 'educated' into Christianity, but I was obviously so stupid that I didn't realise I had all the answers already. That's it. henceforth no more learning for me - I'm a Christian! Or perhaps I should be a Muslim? They claim absolute truth too. Or maybe a Jew? Yummy, the list is endless! Knowledge here I come, baby! (Liddle ol' devil)

Well said. For someone who seems to be so educated they seem to be happy to denounce the other theories as rubbish. No other theories have been 100% proven.

I'm with you Sash6306.
Show me the 'scientific proof'' Liddle ol' me! Everything scientific for the formation of the Earth, Universe is just 'THEORY'. Evolution is interesting and does indeed seem to allow animals to slightly adjust to their environment (a great mechanism) buy how can a whale have its head and tail millions of years apart in sedimentary rock? Think about it!

I think that the story was loving, kind and ment to uplift not cause a debate and science does not give all the answers, just gives rise to more questions.

Maybe the next big bang will create a multi chip computer with blu-ray and HD-DVD. Ha Ha!

Ahh that is so lovely! Kinda restores your faith (religious or not ) that there are some kind and thoughtful people in the world. :)

You've given me second wind, stora!

But seriously last point: look back through the responses so far and think about why religion (or anti-learning) continues to exist. One very clear reason is that people are afraid to have their beliefs questioned. Deep down, our basic human intelligence - even if is hasn't been honed by a good education - understandsthat god is a myth. But, and here is the problem, most people refuse to confront their intuitive understandings and carry on burying attempts to discuss and critique . So much so that they will even go to their deathbed feeding the lie. What a miserable waste of human talent. But now I will keep quiet and see if any religionists have something constructive to say to add to our knowledge base. I'll just leave you with a very simple quote to consider. I don't like that the author draws on the religious binary discourse of 'good and evil', but he does capture a basic truth about the problem with religion:

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." Steven Weinberg.

I'm all for education and learning. I dont myself believe in God i just think there is a time and a place for this discussion, which although you seem to be aware of you havnt 'learned' to stop posting about it. :whistling:

erm... that would take a while. I can point you to some good books if you have the time though?

Yes, a commonly held view perhaps. You've hit on a half-truth though. Human knowledge is built on theory. We theorise to test ideas and from there to seek evidence. But it's foolish to think we have no knowledge, only theory. How do you think all those wonderful electronic devices work in your home? And what about when a surgeon operates on you? Do you think these are just the product of 'theory'? Clearly not. They are the result of scientific knowledge. Real knowledge, not imaginary belief.![/QUOTE]

michaelmakro
Evolution is interesting and does indeed seem to allow animals to slightly adjust to their environment (a great mechanism) but how can a whale have its head and tail millions of years apart in sedimentary rock? Think about it!

Ok, I'll give that some thought .!

Well done for spotting that! ;-) That, my friend is the point. What would you have us do? Stop asking questions? I'm afraid if we did that, the chances of that surgeon making a fatal mistake when poking around in your body would be greatly increased. It's fine if you want to kid yourself that you have all the answers. My money is on science.

michaelmakro
Maybe the next big bang will create a multi chip computer with blu-ray and HD-DVD. Ha Ha!

Again, you are getting there. You are beginning to equate science with learning and knowledge, even if you still have a few dots to join. Keep it up!

What a beautiful story, the innocence of a child and the kindness of a stranger, in this cynical old world of ours.
I wish we could hear of more things like this than the usual depressing news.

Thanks for the interest - glad you enjoyed the story:thumbsup:
We've had many guinea pigs. In that picture is Elvis, Biscuit and Fred. Elvis is right here with me now, Biscuit unfortunately had to be put down because of an eye problem that wouldn't heal - I cried all the way home from the vet when we had him put down - and Fred was lovely on his own but with the other two wanted to fight so I gave him to a good home who say he's absolutely lovely!
