What format is the downloaded file in? .deb? .rpm? .cnr?

file:///mnt/home/Downloads/firefox-3.0.8(2).tar.bz2

opens to loads of smaller files and can't open any of them

You should just be able to run the firefox file.

Looking around there's a set of instructions here on how to install firefox 3 for the Aspire One and update it's shortcuts to point to the new version. That is a few months old though, so you probably want to check the package manager/system update or other similar sounding thing to see if Acer have released version 3 through that yet though.
