linux is okay, but it seems a lot of hassle considering everything is compatible with windows. Considering its free its definitely worth a look if you are reasonably computer literate. Anyone else should probably stay away because it will confuse them and delete everything on their USB sticks - school boy error.

Stick in there. It's a BIG learning curve with Linux but once things start to fall in place it will get easier.

I've not used fedora (red hat) for years, as Ubuntu is now very easy to use and very stable.

I think this is user error and not down to the OS (Linux)

I've used quite a few Linux distros over the years, mainly Red Hat, Fedora and Ubuntu plus others like Solaris.

I think Linux as a general operating system has improved massively over the last few years, it used to be a real challenge getting Linux up and running fully especially on laptops. However these days it's generally a complete breeze to install, I agree with the Ubuntu recommendations - it's a very complete system out of the box and thanks to it having Debian's excellent package management it's easy to install additional software.

At the moment I don't run Linux as the primary operating system on my current machines, Windows suits my needs better however I think Linux is particularly good for server use. There are many specialised versions to fit a particular need such as a router or nas box, buliding a Linux system gives a massive amount of flexibility. It's very easy to maintain a Linux system headless without needing to use remote control just through your browser.
