Little help with being potentially scammed

Right, am looking into buying something from an online retailer that doesn't offer Paypal, only BT or Alertpay, he has been happy enough to send me an alertpay request for the full amount, with details of the order and the shipping address, cost etc all in the pament request so I figured I had covered myself there.
Alertpay are being awkward and will only allow me to send $500 per month, the other option is to send a BT to someone I don't know for a considerably large amount, is there any other way to get the money there (without actually taking it in person) that would be safer, if not how should I go about it?
Thanks for any help, wouldn't normally ask but it is a reasonable sum to send and I want to be as careful as I can be with it.

Go with your gut instinct that you may be scammed and avoid, can you not buy elsewhere?

Site and item would help.

It's not something I'll post on this forum mate, sorry, wouldn't be appreciated I don't think :)
What I am after isn't available from many people, and this seems like the least dodgy, my other option may be to go to Leeds (from down South) and get them in person, or try to find an alternate supplier.
He has been quite helpful and answered all my questions so far, I am just being extra cautious on this one.

Easier and cheaper to take the trip to Leeds and be 100% sure its ok than get stung and then go to all the messing around and stress of getting the money back....

Walk away or go down and collect it and pay cash if it's alot of money .
