Liverpool FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year deal.

The England midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.

Cole becomes the club's second signing of the summer after Milan Jovanovic.

The 28-year-old arrives from Chelsea, where he won three league titles and two FA Cups during a seven-year spell.

He is a product of the West Ham youth system and has represented his country 56 times, scoring 10 goals in the process.

How high did you have to leap to get onto the Joe Cole bandwagon? :p

Not a bad player but not as special as he has made out. Media just trying to create a hero during the World Cup.

Liverpool still won't finish any higher than 4th.

hes a quality player and will do us a lot of good, although i agree that we wont go higher than 4th this season and we will struggle to get that imo, but this is one step in the right direction

hopefully he'l get the number 7 shirt and do it proud.

When Joe was playing like he was 2-3 years ago, this would have probably alarmed me.

Now I just think that he was pricing himself out of a move to Spurs or Arsenal. Slightly saddened that he took money over Champions League football and pushing for titles.
#7
This definetly means Torres and Gerrard are staying put no way Cole would of joined if they were on the way out.

Yep..... looks like Maynor Figueroa will be next through the door, then Ever Banega once Masch is gone.

Not convinced by Loic Remy though....

I dont think its that. he would't have got in the Spurs side or Arsenal there are better players in front of him where he plays at liverpool there aint.

a crocked chelsea reserve whose best days are regrettably behind him.

I suppose big sam didn't have enough cash to take him to blackburn so liverpool were the next best thing.

But not a bad replacement for a 30-year-old who was becoming as inconsistent as Luis Garcia was before him. I reckon we'll get more out of Joe Cole than we did Benayoun.

Rumour is Banega has already signed today. ( Think its bull)

No.7 Shirt for Joel.

I expect one signing by the end of the week.

That's faulty logic. Hodgson probably just agreed to his wage demands and guaranteed him starting place every week.

He wouldn't have gotten that at a Champions League club like Chelsea, United, Arsenal or Spurs and Man City just signed David Silva. With a young family he was unlikely to go abroad so it was probably the best deal money-wise.

that I'll give you, the benayoun thing is nuts. If benayoun can't get his gamne for a mid table premiership team what on earth is he going to do at chelsea.
#16
Obviously decided he'd won enough titles, and didn't want to win any more.
Fair play to him, the Europa cup should provide some big games.

Here's the problem - Yossi and Joe are both bench/squad players. But only one of them is happy with that role, and the other one has been injury prone for the last few seasons. So it seems like Liverpool have paid over the odds to a player whose best years are in all likelihood behind him and who doesn't like to sit on the bench.

You've also got to think if you've got enough doctors and beds for Aquilani, Torres, Cole et al.

Sit on the bench, play the last 30 minutes of home games when we're 4-0 up, occasionally be brought on to 'change a game', get a couple of goals, a few assists....the same thing Joe was.

Except he won't moan about it and demand the same wages as Lamps and JT.

here a stat just tweeted by opta that may dampen the euphoria of the liverpool fans, cole has started 28 games in the last 2 seasons combined, the same amount he made in season 07/08 alone.

But the main reason Benayoun wanted to leave was that he was in and out of the team - his move to Chelsea can only be for financial reasons and for a higher chance of honours, as he'll get less playing time at Stamford Bridge imo.

He's also best playing in 'the hole' behind a lone striker - is pretty ineffective when out wide, as he always tries to cut inside.

Cole can play any one of three positions for us, and will start the vase majority of games I'd imagine. He'll get more playing time that at any of the other clubs interested in him.

In his defence, that doesn't mean he's injury-prone. He genuinely wasn't good enough to get in the team last season. Honestly, they should have gone for Ballack instead.

Another stat - Torres hasn't played more than 25 league games in either of the last 2 seasons.

I can't understand why he'd stay at Liverpool where he'll carry the goalscoring burden alone, will have to play Europa League football and won't get a rest. At least if he went to Chelsea he could get a game off here and then, save himself for a crack at the Champions League and prolong his career.
#22
Suprised he has gone there tbh, considering he could have gone to Spurs (or others). Perhaps he feels there is a bigger role for him to slot into at Liverpool.
#23
not sure how I feel about Cole, can be a decent attacking player but has been riddled by injury, if he can get fit then defo a decent addition

Im surprised he left London but not surprised he turned down Spurs, they'll go out of the Champs league in the group stage it will affect their league form and they wont qualify for it next season
#24
as a Spurs supporter this thread pleases me greatly!! i thought we were nailed on to get him lol

As a chelsea supporter and not just judging him on one good england game, jumping on the joe cole bandwagon ; Hes useless. he lost it 2 years ago and never seems like he can be bothered to play. he losses the ball a lot and doesnt beat players anymore. he thinks hes a better player than he is. Happy to "trade" joe for benayoun he was a waste of space and kalou and sinclair are much better promising talent for the team.

That's a joke. Sinclair will be off either on loan or permanently.

It's a slightly sad move for Joe. He's been a fan favourite so he will be wished well wherever he went, but I'm surprised he didn't back himself to go to Arsenal or Spurs, maybe take a pay cut and try and force his way into a team challenging for honours and playing Champions League football.

neither of those clubs have challenged for trophies in years, one bad season for Liverpool and suddenly they're the football wilderness

I've been following sinclair for a few years and actually know him through a friend of a friend. He might be on loan this year but is a great talent chelsea should expose.

joe cole isnt a fan favourite at all, and hasnt been for years now. you might want to look here. i'm very happy to have benayoun instead of joe cole, and will laugh next season when joe gets dropped.

Joe has been a favourite for years. He's always been well-regarded and he's had bad luck with injuries. Suggesting he isn't is baloney my friend.

As for Scott Sinclair, he was a great prospect but he couldn't hold down a place at Wigan or Brum and has shown no signs of improving. He's off on loan at best, or a permanent transfer. There are other young players pushing ahead of him in the queue for places too.
#31
Is he really that injury prone?? Looking at the stats, he's only really had two noteable periods out of the game in the last 8 years...... it hardly makes him Michael Owen.

02/03 - 40 games
03/04 - 50 games
04/05 - 46 games
05/06 - 48 games
06/07 - 24 games
07/08 - 49 games
08/09 - 20 games
09/10 - 29 games
#32
I'm surprised that Joe (or any other injury-prone player) can still get good wage deals without being able to demonstrate absolute fitness and liklihood of playing a high percentage of games.

I thought that the Owen / Fergie deal from last season made lots of sense and would be copied by many (?)

Apparently not

I'm not a Liverpool fan but I wish them good luck for next season

xx

that is good :-D im not keen on a lot of the other signings weve been linked with though, i wouldnt mind loic remy he is a decent player but im a bit wary of how much may be spent on him, no more than 10 million and even then i think tht is a bit much

Just need Torres to state his intentions now, and things are looking up.

Yeah, I'm unusure about Remy, but like you say if we could get him for £8m-£10m it might not be too bad a deal. Not sure if he could lead the line on his own in the absence of Torres though (someone like Santa Cruz might be a cheap option, or even gettting Crouch back)? Bryan Ruiz (who we've also been linked too) looks a decent player too.

Figueroa should be signing within the next 48 hours as well.

the season hasnt even started yet with still loads of transfers to be completed yet some idiots are already saying liverpool wont finish above 4th.......

how ridiculous?

+1

Within the space of 24 hours our team has been given two massive boosts. If Torres stays that would be another, but if he goes, it would lower expectations massively....... its way too early to make predictions for the season.
#38
Did say Cole wouldn't of come unless the main two would stay.
#39
I think if Drogba goes to City it is inevitible that Torres will go south.

Will be interesting to see what Hodgson can get out of the underperforming players next season.

Don't know about that, but I reckon he wouldn't have come (and Gerrard wouldn't have comitted) if investment wasn't on the way.............
