Bit of local news for everyone
Dronfield Drifters RLFC are preparing for their first match of the new Kukri Midlands Rugby League Campaign agianst Haworth RLFC on 29th May.
Formed over the winter in Dronfield, the Drifters aim to give players and spectators from new areas a chance to play and watch Rugby League in the summer.
"There was a group of us living in the area who have played Rugby League for most of our lives but had no summer club that we felt catered to our needs." commented founder Mark Slatter. "We are a club with a unique philosophy and are inclusive and very open. We want to have fun while playing, all the founders have played for many years but jobs and families have taken over and time is now less for the training needed to play to the level they were used to. The idea behind the Drifters is to enjoy the game and to make the event around the game an occasion in itself. This includes having BBQs and even live bands if we can. We want to encourage new people to play and to watch the game and a family and fun atmosphere is vital to this."
The Drifters will spend this year away from their Dronfield base playing at Door Moor, the home of the Sheffield Tigers RUFC.
"It is a shame we have had to make this decision but unfortunately the poor weather that we have experienced over the winter meant that the pitches at the stunning Gosford Fields ground are needing to be relayed over the summer." Commented club spokesman and co-founder Richard Pitchfork. "The Sheffield Tigers have been very helpful in quickly being able to offer us the pitches and club house to step into the breach and we are extremely greatful for this and hope we can repay them with great support and great game day atmospheres."
The Drifters kick off their season with a 2pm kick off on Saturday 29th May at the Door Moor ground on Hathersage Road.
