I went in yesterday and took the ethernet cable out of the back of one of the pcs to connect my laptop(as that way I dont log in and so my allowance isnt used lol)

Didnt get a chance to reconnect cable at end as library closed and came in 20 minutes ago to find pc switched off(wasnt using it anyway) I asked the staff and they said it wasnt connecting to the network and they werent sure what was wrong.

The ethernet cable was right where I left it!

And the 2 main IT tech guys for the uni didnt know what was wrong either I connected the cable and it worked.

Great IT staff eh!

so it's a case of 'is it plugged in?'.... should be the first question you think of =)

Something similar happened with me when I last went into a hospital. I unplugged this person's life support machine, to plug my laptop in. Then this loud noise started, so I left quickly. When I came back later, the wire was exactly where I had left it and there was this big black bag where the man had been laying. I asked one of the nurses what happened, she told me to mind my own business and to put some trousers on.

Great intensive care staff eh!

Grrr. I work at a Uni (as a lecturer) and this happens in my lab all the time. The cables are all over the place. I wouldn't mind except there is good wireless in the lab too. Our IT servies dept warn students against using the standard network cables BTW because they force upgrades through the network and sometimes this messes up laptops that are connected but shouldn't be.

Makes sense every time I connect to the library network it crashes often saying hard drive couldnt be read at random but in my room it doesnt.

TBH the only reason I do is that the connection isnt blocked at all as I cant even run windows update in my room, nor download legitimate software from many websites.

There isnt an allowance as such its just like a ISP, download too much in a short period and they kick you off, do it more than 3 times and you are banned forever.

Happened to me twice so far, both times after I reinstalled Vista and had to download software, Vista SP1, updates etc.

that seems very harsh. I don't think we have limits like that. I think the JANET network has massive capacity so I see no reason why a uni should limit you like this. Uni's use other measures to stop bandwidth-hogs like p2p networks.

thats a bit harsh innit, I can understand if it's people using p2p ect but surely they revoke the warnings when they find out you were downloading serivce packs!

Very clever thing you did there

Its because they classify you as a bandwith hog then you see as they disconnect you in case you download a lot.

The sign up page mentions about how things like Skype, Youtube, MSN or online tv like 4OD use loads of bandwith so ban them, also cant access sites like Rapidshare, Megaupload or Sendspace at all etc, cant do online gaming though the excuse for that is to stop people from getting "distracted" in my mind it means they arent making cash as they dont seem to mind people getting drunk in the bar every day and missing lectures but online gaming is banned as it affects your work!

There's a good reason why piracy has always found a home in University computers...... speed was one.

Unis have legal obligation to prevent illegal activity via their networks, but I seem to recall JANET actually asking universities to use Skype and the like. The network universities connect to is really fab, if the university are limiting use them it is because of limitations in their internal infrastrcuture.

I know they use IBIS and UKERNA not sure if thsta JANET.

They block loads of fwebsites too but its the router they use, as I say if I use a uni pc in library many sites are blocked just like in the rooms but connect my laptop to it and no sites are blocked and I can even use torrents

In other words, they're clueless :).
