Long Shot I Know - Anyone know how to colourise a black and white photo? GOT IT !!

Quick reason for the question - I am putting together two collages of photos for my Dad so he can remember his seafaring days now he is in a sheltered aprtment for old seadogs

His first years at sea were 1949 - 1965 and his second stint was 1974 - 1988

I have all teh phots of his ships and I want to do the first group in black and white and the second group in colour - however I have 14 of the 15 ships in the second group in colour but one ship I can only find a black and white image.

Now I know there is softeware that can colourise black and white photos, like "recolor" but I tried a demo and could only get it to add a tint.

Does anyone have experience in this type of photo . image manipulation?

I have a good quality black and white image 750x450 pixel image that I would realy like to gat looking something like a colour photo.

Any ideas / help / advise very very gratefully received

TIA

I dont think there are any programs that will do this, at least not effectively. You can do it manualy in photoshop of whatever, it just takes a lot of time dependant on how detailed the picture is.

Do you mind telling me the name of the ship you want to colourize ? It's an outside chance but my dad and grandad were in the merchant and RN.

No problem - the ship was the "British Wasa" and Dad was on her in 1976.

Aso kmown in the 1980's the EMMA METHENITIS and BARBARA MORGAN

You can do it on Photoshop but it can take a while depending upon how much you want to colour. Also, you won't get a full colour photo but will end up with one looking like the hand coloured pics from the early 20th Century - or at least I did. If you'd like me to have a crack at it for you drop me a PM. Can't promise a masterpiece however!

Yes she was a nice ship - I sailed with him on her when I was still at school

They do not make them like that any more

BTW this was Dad's first ship back in 1949

and this is one of Dad's own photos :)

No they certainly don't, a lot of the old merchant ships are still about today as they was that well built.

Where did you get that info from?

My understanding was that she ended her life as the BARBARA MORGAN and was scrapped in China in Nov 1993!

I am at present working right across the clyde from where the new destroyers are being built. It is amazing seeing them being built and watching the daring sail out was incredible.

I was in Pompey when they launched the bow of the Daring, that was quite good. I also see them launch HMS Clyde a few years back.

I've never actually got to see the launching of a proper warship though which is a shame.

I regret missing this;

Just got to know what you are doing;-)

Seriously if you want to find photos for your familly of old ships the use this site to find the Official Number (IMO) from the ships name then it gives you the other names the same ship has had.

http://www.miramarshipindex.org.nz/

then from the IMO you can search all the the many ship photo site.

This phot came from

http://www.fotoflite.com/ and I had to phptoshop out the watermark :whistling:

but it is better than nothing.

I will post photos of the collages when they are complete....

OK the photo was taken in June 1982 and she was built in Innoshima Japan by Hitachi
in 1969 so she would have been 13 years old. In this photo she was named Emma Methenitis

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj99/elitom/british_wasa_colour.jpg

I sailed on her for a few weeks in 1976 with my Dad.

She was finally scrapped in 1993 in China
