Looking For A Bike...

Hopefully some of you can be of assistance...
I am after a mountain or hybrid bike (probably the former) which is going to last a good few years and be ok for road riding but be able to cope off road as well.

Not looking to spend a fortune, ideally £150ish so any recommendations or at least what should I be looking for?
What brands are good now?
What components should I be looking for? ie I hate gripshift.

Any advice would be great cheers.

P.S. I'm 5ft10ish

You won't get a good ride for £150, unless you buy second hand from the Bay, a bike for that sort of wonga will be a heavy bag of spanners, for a decent new hybrid/mountain you would be looking to spend £250+ something like a Giant would give you a good reliable ride IMO.

Your best option is getting secondhand locally so you can get something that was £300 approx originally for your £150. You do get reasonable new bikes appearing for £150 as its just about the baseline for bikes with good basic components but most bikes at this price will have a few compromises.

You really need to decide what is more important road or offroad. If its mainly road a hybrid would be ideal, it still allows you to go off road. It really depends to what you want to do offroad.

Carrera Subway from Halfords is a good bike for about £250 at the moment. Good components and they assemble it for you. Edinburgh Cycles used to a do a a budget courier bike which was excellent.

Where abouts do you live?

Cheers, seen there have been a few deals over the last few months but generally on small frames.
I don't mind upping my limit to say £200 but depends I suppose as I can just wait and get one.

I am based in SE London next to the thames.

I want it for the summer though thus want it now ideally.
Although that sounded like quite a deal! I have a mate who I think still works for Halfords just not near me! Cheers for the recommendation if I get down there.

Right well I think I've narrowed it down...and upped my limit (as usual!).

Think I might go for the ROCKRIDER 5.3 @ £299 but does anyone know a better deal, ie with hydro brakes maybe or better forks etc?
