Does anyone knwo of any cool RTS games like Red alert that we can pick up cheap and play online? We tried Red Alert 2 but the servers for online play seem to be down and we cant play across lan cause it needs IPX and one of us is on Vista.

Much appreciated if anyone has any suggestions

I wouldn't recommend any of the C&C series other than C&C3 for playing over the LAN as the IPX protocol is one laggy beast! Starcraft is pretty similar and still rather popular online. Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander are basically bigger versions of C&C, instead of fighting with 10 - 20 units you fight with about 100... I also really like Warhammer: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, a bit more strategy involved as they both have cover systems (they are basically the same game but different settings)

I'd also recommend Dawn of War as it's cheap, runs well and is a great RTS. While it's nothing revolutionary it's a very solid RTS implementation which forces players to get out of their bases and attack as turtling just leads to defeat. There is the original game and three expansion packs, the original Dawn of War offered the Space Marines, Chaos, Eldar and Orks. Winter Assault added the Imperial Guard, Dark Crusade added the Tau and Necron and the recently released Soulstorm finished off with the Sisters of battle and Dark Eldar.

I'd recommend looking for the Dawn of War Anthology pack which is Dawn of War, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade as this gives you a great variety of races but can often be picked up cheap.

The Complete Collection is around 30 pounds and includes everything but so far I'm not too convinced by Soulstorm although I perhaps need to give it more time...if you can get the Anthology pack cheap though that would be my recommendation. Even though the game is getting old now I still think it's a great looking game, not in terms of pure graphics but it has great art design and the animations are superb. I never tire watching the Space Marine Dreadnaught (a sort of beefed up ED-209) wading into battle with its assault cannon roaring, setting the enemy troops alight with its flame thrower then getting into close combat slamming soldiers all over the place with its powerfist finishing off by grabbing the enemy commander, breaking his back then spinning him on the powerfist in front of the enemy troops before chucking the bloodied corpse away.

Age Of Empires or Age Of Kings : The Conquerors, you'l struggled to find a better RTS IMO

should play fine over a network and also online, sadly not much in the way of online play for them now

Yeah Age Of Empires is cool. We play AofE II. C&C Generals or Tiberium wars are also good. One of my personal faves and an underrated game in my opinion is Populous: The Beginning.

You can add IPX to vista apparently... http://www.starbase01.com/site/index.php?id=22,87,0,0,1,0

u dont need to use the westwood servers for on line play u can use hamachi to emulate a lan, one note is that u need to have version 10.1.1 any later will break the ipx stack on your system and will cause even the real lan not to work with ra2
ra2 also wont pick up 64 bit ipx drivers correctly even on xp64 so 32 bit only i'm afraid haven't tried with vista worth looking at shengis's link.
is this weird after all this time we have three threads mentioning red alert?

Thanks everyone, ive downloaded Hamachi to emulate the lan. ANd going to give that a quick go with RA2. If we cant get that to work i think we'll try dawn of war and maybe a few of the others. We have got Age of empires but were looking for something a bit different.
Will let you know how it goes :)
