Hey everyone, I've been trying to find a new laptop, i have been scouring the internet with a sieve trying to find a laptop suitable for my needs/wants. I dont know why but i am after a fairly high spec machine - C2D, 4GB Ram, Wireless N (bluetooth poss) a fairly big HDD. I have littled my list down to 2 possibles.

The first is a Samsung which seems to be very high spec n ticks all the boxes, however the company selling it seem to have awful reputation for after service and also there isnt any definitive reviews for it. The second is a Sony, i dont know why but I must be sonys ideal target because ive fallen for their products but they are so expensive for the little spec you actually pay for.

I would be ever so grateful for any views, comments or suggestions on what you think would be a good £/spec ratio... Budget should be around 600 but can go higher if its worth the extra pennies! I would tell you what it would be used for but it wouldnt justify the reasoning for the high spec, i dont game but id like to know i could if i wanted to (i play sims looool - i know im sad n its hardly gfx intensive), however i do use Adobe's products regularly photoshop, dreamweaver, flash etc

Links to both in next post. - sorry for the essay post lol, all help will be repped as always
Thanks in advance!!!

As much as I agree it is indeed a brilliant spec for the money its certainly made me look twice - the GFX card lets it down but not to the extent that its a party pooper.

Youve really thrown a spanner in the works lol :p

Damn it just found out that voucher expires tonight :-( - Dont get paid till Friday lol - just my luck :x

I think ive repped everybody!

You could look at a vostro from the small business site - there is a 10% off code that expires on the 29th when you spend over £449 exc. VAT.

There's new vostros due out any time now from dell, which could push the current ones down to get a bargain.
#15
Are small businesses ok for a non business user? Or do i have to provide false compnay info to be eligible?

Edit: Thanks Emasu - You da man lol
#16

It's fine, when you're ordering just put in that you're a home user.

dells delivery is 10 working days atm
missus ordered the studio 15 (2nd from left) with 10% off voucher 449 quid
with dell it seems to be you should upgrade as little as possible - just choose the next model up and start again
eg upgrading processor may be 90quid but next model up only 50quid more
xps seems to be more about style and compactness at your budget than function

tbh seem to be some decent acer around that price

Nah i just reckon you got real lucky, i had 2 sony recons from DSG and both broke, one was DOA and the other the Q,W,A and S keys didnt work, and when i tried to get it repaired i just got given a refund - had to fight them to repair it because it was the laptop i really wanted at the time.

*Goes and cries in the corner... Payday not till friday - 10% off expires in 2.5 Hours :x:x:x

If they go and extend the SB deals for another week, a 1.8Ghz C2D, 3GB, 250GB, 256mb Nvidia Card and 3yr onsite warranty for £469 delivered is very reasonable.

Been reading up on Dells and it seems the studios have a few issues that are very common, such as the CD drive ejecting randomly... Hmmm dont think im ever gonna find a laptop unless i comprimise on something. Appreciate all the help, and if ive not repped you tell me and ill amend it!

Thank you!!!

Tried to Re-Rep but i cant yet, that seems a cracking deal for me, just out of interest what is a free fall sensor hard drive, is that one of those IBM "brace for impact" hdds?

As always Emasu your help has been invaluable to me, maybe someday i will be able to return the favour!

Thanks again!

From what I understand the laptop/HDD will detect if the laptop is about to smash into the floor or you have just dropped it and takes action to prevent your hard drive from corrupting. It's also a faster drive @ 7200rpm.

You would get £21.36 cashback through quidco if you went for it. You would need to go through small/medium business.

Remember also, you can have XP Pro as well as Vista Biz for only £10 more.
#34
Does Quidco track okay with Dell, it says on Quidco reliability is low
#35
Not sure if Emasu will see this but i tried to buy that dell you suggested but its like £625.60 when you include VAT so maybe not such a great deal as i thought.

If ive missed something please let me know. Thanks!!!
#36
Just saw that the Dell 10% off code is back!!! So i shall probably try the studio or maybe the XPS dunno which one to go for yet...
#37
Sorry to double post, but has are people still having problems with the Dell Studio laptops... such as buggy bios, random ejecting and corrupting touch keys???
