My mum (75 years old) wants to get online and has given me the task of finding a laptop. It will just be used for surfing the net and Skype calls (maybe). Top price would be £400 but would like something cheaper. Also would prefer a lappy to a netbook. Any pointers would be a help.

Regards

the asus ul30a from carphone warehouse is a nice deal, just 349 for a slim neat small notebook, but decent size screen.

mind, my asus 1005p that i'm typing on now is GREAT for just 199 from argos, true it's just a netbook, 10" screen but very useable keyboard.

both of these pc's have 10+ hrs of battery life too

Yes is a good price. You don't get many laptops under £300 that come with an OS. OP please note it is not a dual core processor that is a mistake on Argos's site.

Well it claims its the Celeron 900 on this model (also sold at Amazon) and all current dual core models come with at least 250gb hard disks. Fujitsu make it confusing because the use the same prefix which is the model chassis on many different configurations.

If your laptop uses Celeron 900, it will NOT be dual core.

You just said it uses a Pentium Dual Core! That is not a Celeron 900.

Yes the one you linked to is not bad at all for the money and I doubt his/her gran will want to be multi tasking much anyway.

The best low-end deal I can find (in the 5 mins of looking!) is THIS. Dual core, HDMI and webcam so should suit the majority of users.

Ps nice pic, pity your lappy doesn't have a web cam!;-):-D

My recommendation would be a laptop using a screen size of at least 17 inches since an elderly person would appreciate larger text. However, if the native resolution of the 17 inch screen is too high, it renders the text small and difficult to read. Setting to a lower resolution means the display has to be scaled, reducing clarity. Ideally the keyboard would use full sized keys that provide good travel and feedback from each keypress.

I feel (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Fujitsu_AMILO_Li3910_Laptop_VFY_L3910MRIU2GB/version.asp) would be a suitable option given an 18 inch screen with a resolution of 1680x945 and a keyboard that is full-sized but unfortunately, the whole width of the chassis has not been used resulting in a rather cramped layout of the keys.

The Intel T3000 dual core processor will handle internet and Skype with plenty to spare and 2GB of RAM is sufficient for most single task operations. The intended use for Skype is aided by the bonus of a built in webcam and microphone. At 3p below the maximum budget, it is more than capable of light tasks with the added bonus of a relatively large screen.

How about an older lappie with Ubuntu, rather than Windows. It's still not completely fireproof, but there's a lot less malware targeted at non-Windows operating systems.

You get word processor and spreadsheet software as well.

Plus it's free and there's absolutely no licence issues

£339 at dell, nothing fantastic about it, but reliable decent backup, if you ever need a new power unit or something you can deal direct and get a proper bit, and you get it with reinstall discs if needed

but more than enough for online use, and the usual bit of typing up stuff or looking at family photos

but that makes you 61 quid under budget! no webcam though, but cheap enough to add on, but can use skype just to talk without buying anything

Here's a 17" at Argos that might suit

MSI CR700 17.3in Laptop
T3100 1.9GHz processor, 2GB RAM memory, 250GB hard drive

If OPs gran ever uses a friend's computer (or a friend uses hers) it might be easier if they just stick to one OS. Most people are familiar with Windows if they need to give her a hand.
