Poor thing has always had his brothers hand-me-downs, and has put "new phone" on his xmas list, it actually said ipod phone but he also put down 42" plasma and laptop!! (cant wait to see his face xmas morning)

anyway...I would like to get him a mobile that has a camera & video, is fairly cool looking, either flip or slide BUT doesnt cost a fortune! His brothers have both had phones robbed from them in the past and I dont want to go down that expensive route again!
any suggestions much appreciated!!!

OH has put a limit of £50 on it!! bah humbug!! :w00t: any network,

#5
The screen on a 'slide' is still on the outside.

Phones 4 u offer £10 cashback through quidco.

I like him to have a phone for safety reasons, I know I can always ring him when he is out playing, and that he can ring me should he need me:)
#15
you can ask them in woolworths to order one for you

My son was 11 just recently, and I got him the Motorola F3 with £20 credit from the Tesco deal for just under £14 delivered, which I only really bought as it was a bargain. I didn't think he would be too impressed, but we are all gobsmacked by just how over the moon he is with it! He thinks is just the coolest thing he has ever had.

I know its not suitable for your son, as it doesn't actually 'do' anything really but just wanted to share my joy :-D

Can understand where you coming from, just have to be carefully what phone you buy. We all hear now kids that get mugged for their moblie phones it shows the state of the world is these days when it comes to mugging phones off kids.

then again Pokemon playing cards when they first hit the scene, i dont think i need to say more about them :?

that is one of the reasons why we didnt want too spend a fortune on a phone, just incase it did get nicked off him, (he knows not to resist and just hand things over)
and the deal i just got is amazing value thanks to m00nie!

kk, maybe its me, but a mobile for an 11 yr old? I admit I got pretty much what I wanted as a child, but I had to wait till 13/14 for a mobile phone and only then I got one as my parents felt it necessary since I was helping out at a local stables which had no phone so it was more of an emergency use kinda thing.

Who does an 11 yr old talk to that they don't see everyday in school? Maybe I'm out of touch already at the tender age of 20 lol

Oh well. Good look finding a phone. What about the motorola e900 that was on offer on here a while back at £35 bet you can still pick them up at around that cost and you can get it in black instead of the pick colour pictured.

As i said earlier in the thread, He doesnt use it to "talk" to friends, it is so I can contact him and vice versa, purely for my piece of mind. It also doubles as camera, video and mp3, a bargain in my eyes!

My daughter is 11 and has a mobile. If she goes to the shop or playing out with friends she can ring me and i can ring her. She has had £10 credit on it for some time now and never uses it to text or call friends but its so handy in this day and age so maybe yes, you are out of touch. I feel safer and so does she.:)

I also have 20 year old lad and when he had his phone we made a mistake of a contract phone and as he was working evening and a paper round he thought he would be able to pay. During the first month he ran up a hefty bill of £140 and i could not afford it so i sold his precious playstation to pay for it. He learn't from a young age that things cost money.

 thankyou. I too made the mistake with my eldest and a contract phone, and got into a similar predicament!:x
My parents also argued that he didnt need one, until they babysat one day and agreed how easy it was to let him out to play without the worry.

A few weeks ago I would have agreed with every word. My daughter is 9 years old. I take her and collect her from school. She sees her friends every day at school. And when she is at home she isn't allowed further than the end of our street. So why would she possibly need a phone?
Answer: She started at a new school in September. There are 500 pupils leaving school at the same time, and although I wait for her at the school entrance she can't always find me in the crowd. On several occasions during the past few weeks she has started to panic when she can't find me. For £30 I'd rather save her the worry. So guess what she'll be getting in her stocking.

all of mine have had phones since they were old enough (11 - 12ish) purely and simply for the safety factor, as for them being mugged for them, both of my eldest have been mugged at knife point one was 24, 6 foot 3 and 18 stone the other 21, and 6 foot 4 and no we dont live in a rough area, and neither time was the phone what they were after, so i dont think him having a phone is an incitement for muggers etc, but it is a good idea for him to have one, for both of your peace of mind, hope he enjoys it

Same answer really isnt it, so i know where he or she is? Think back to when you was 11 etc when we didnt have moblie phones how did your mum and dad cope. It was more a case of we had to be in by set time else we be in trouble.

when I was 11, many moons ago, I used to walk home from my mates( 1/2 mile away,) without any cares or worries, that is the big difference. It was a different world then:-(
#32
likewise bitsey i used to be at the stables from dark to dark had to cycle down country lanes etc, now days my stables are on a heavily used public foot path and cycle track but i still wont stay after dark unless someone else is there just not worth the risk
#33
both have good points, just shows how in a generation the world as we know it has changed for the worst

What about the v3, not the most feature packed phone but i've seen them recently anywhere between £30 and £50, its a flip, has a camera etc.

Or maybe this sagem?

I have a 10, 11, and 12 year old and i said they could not have mobiles till they were 15yrs. But changed my mind they got them to start comp-11yrs. (Eldest got my old phone for 6mth till she got used to having it and thus less likely to lose it. ) As they are now allowed to walk to and from school and also if there are any problems- they are hurt, sick, forget anything they can contact me directly then i ( who knows them better than their teachers) can decide what to do. How many of us have gone to pick are kids up from school when they are 'sick' and there's nothing wrong with them? My middle one done this all the time coz she likes being with her mam :-D
