I'm looking to buy a budget end AMD dual core proccessor. Should I install a new motherboard as well?

Might be worth saving and getting a cheap dell mate

If you do intend to upgrade look at these processors
http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?intStoreID=2&intCatID=230&intSubcatUID=1958
3800+ looks best bet at £18.95

For memory look at these
http://www.ebuyer.com/search/?intStoreID=2&intCatID=3&intSubcatUID=2045
Crucial 2GB kit £48.63

Put these two together and this would make the most difference to your PC

Hope this helps :)

The link you gave isn't very helpful because it doesn't list what processors you motherboard supports or even what socket it uses. However, if we put the model number in on the official compaq page we get this much more useful link.

Looking at the motherboard specifications it says you've got a socket 939 processor and can put in a processor up to an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ which will be a nice upgrade if you can get hold of one.

Your system is a pretty powerful one in the first place though, what are you doing to tax it?

It's much better these days then even a couple of years ago. Of the ones I've tried recently not one has failed to boot X because of my ATI card.

If you do want to try it then Yoper is apparently supposed to be fast and Slax is even easier to try than usual since you can just use a USB flash drive rather than having to burn a CD. Ubuntu is very popular if you'd like to go with the crowd.

Thanks, I use it for converting videos as well and I'm thinking of changing the motherboard because my one supports only DDR.

Get a cheap dell system like
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/19141...p-base-with-v/

Add what you need in the custom configuration screens, although get memory upgrade or GFX elsewhere as much cheaper
