Lord it hurts but what can it be?!

Was kept awake lastnight by a constant throbbing in my thumb, this morning its twice the size and very red and feels hot and solid to the touch, its so painful,I can feel what feels like a lump beneath the skin but what could it possibly be? I even stabbed it with a pin in desperation to relieve the throbbing but it hasnt made any difference at all and nothing came out of it either, trying to get an appointment at my doctors is hopeless, have to wait 2 weeks :(
Any suggestions as to what it might be?

if it gets real bad then go to A & E
#2
a bite? a sting? Best bet is to take yourself off down to casualty
#3
It could be a whitlow. Did it start near the nail?
#4
do you bite your nails if so did you bite the nail to low at the side , i have done this in the past i find doing what you said sticking a pin down the side of the nail and yellow fluid comes out and relieves the pressure
#5
no i dont bite my nails and its actually on the "fingerprint" side of the thumb which is what I dont understand lol

You should go to the doctor - two weeks for an appointment is ridiculous - all surgeries should leave some time for emergencies - if they don't, change doctors!

Has your local Dr's surgery got a treatment room you could call ?
You could try bathing it in water as hot as you can stand it ..
If not, if it was me I would go immediately to A&E as suggested previously as it sounds as if it might need lancing or similar ... good luck
#9
thanks all think i shall take a trip up to the local casualty, feel a bit of a tiss taker going about a thumb but geez the throbbing is driving me round the twist
#10
do you have a nhs drop in center you could try going there or look up the symptoms on nhs online

I'd not go to A&E, you will wait forever to be seen as your neither and accident or an emergency. Find out where your local NHS walk in centre is and thats where you need to go. It's like a doctors but without the appointment.

Bee sting or similar?
You haven't been meeting in hotels with Russians have you ?

phone up the gp for an emergency appointement - all surgeries must have these, otherwise go to a&e. In the meantime you could try bathing it in saltwater - this will help if its due to a bacterial infection. Definately see a doctor soon about it though.

If you call NHS direct they can tell you where your nearest walk in centre is, they are usually quite good and you don't wait too long to be seen, definitely better than waiting at A&E. Otherwise try your local chemist, the pharmisict can usually diagnose most things and offer appropraite treatment.

well I'm still none the wiser as to what it is,had the nurse stumped too,she lanced it,nothing so then opened it up,nothing so she bandaged it all up with some mangesium stuff to try and draw out anything that may be in there but the pain and heat has now travelled half way up my arm and is very painful,I've got to go abck tonight at 7pm when i will hopefully find out what it is
#24
Good luck- hope you get it sorted out soon!

Well if it's a splinter I know you can get an infection from it,or least thats what my Mum told me as a kid when I would get them and she's make sure she got them out to my dislike.
If you only been gardening a few days ago,I wouldn't thought an infection start so soon.
That is really odd!

blood poisoning can come on really quickly, my mom once had a tiny little cut on her finger from the foil of a catering size can of nescafe, by 8.00pm she was at A&E, it had spread right up her arm, almost to the shoulder, she had to spend 3 days in hospital and its quite serious, can even be fatal if it spreads to your heart so keep an eye on it

did they not give u antibiotics?
how are u felling in yourself?
#29
no antibiotics, just wrapped up to see if anything comes out of it,feel awfully tired and the heat off my arm could fry an egg lol I'm hoping that they will find the cause of it today cos its driving me crackers now to say the least

Does sound like you have an infection the way its tracking up your arm - even a minor insect bite/splinter wound can get infected. Make sure you go back at 7pm and if you get any other symptons go back sooner.

You might want to mention if its been a while since you had a tetanus jab.......just in case they haven't asked.

Last time I had to have a drip in hospital, my arm went the same, had to have two courses of antibiotics to clear it, i agree with ejaned, go straight back and tell them you need it sorting now. Hope it gets better soon.

well been back all be it earlier than they expected me,saw a different nurse who gave me a local before she started poking my thumb and opening it up with needles, she managed to get a long slither of glass out of it but is worried about the infection, there was a big ball of puss (yuck) behind it,its all dressed up again now and I have to go back yet again but this time to see a consultant

now I'm wondering just how long that slither of glass had been in there lol

what are u taking for the pain?
#38
no antibiotics she said we will leave that to the consultant which is a bit worrying as I would rather be on them now as its pretty clear to see the infection is angry,I'm taking ibuprofen for the pain but its not touching it :(

You can take something like co-codamol as well as ibuprofen, ask the pharmacist which are the strongest, at least you can kill the pain while waiting for consultant,
