Lost and found question

While out shopping with the family the other weekend at newish shopping centre, we found a small "apple logo" shopping bag with contents that someone had left in the dining area.

I asked around and it didn't belong to anyone. So did the honest thing and took it into the Apple store nearby, after we'd finished eating (where I'd assumed it was purchased from, still in wrapper and with price ticket on).

The floating salesman said no-one's ever handed any found property into to them and checked with manager what to do. Manager just said put it in my office. No thank you for handing it in, or what's your number so we can contact you if it's not claimed.

When I asked what happens to lost property that's not been claimed she simply said "we donate it to charity". Do I believer her? Don't know really, I've just got her word on it. I feel it will it go to member of staff or back on shelf for resale. Would be happier if it did actually go to charity though.

I'm curious, what is the law in this situation? If I'd handed it into police station and it wasn't claimed within 6 months I thought they'd usually return it to the finder.

Value of item was £145!

So if it belonged to you, just go back to "apple store" in Westfield shopping centre to claim it back.

Once found a purse in a shop changing room but there was no way I was going to hand it into the shop owner. I took it to the police station instead.

I think you should go back to the store and ask why they didnt take your detaild and get some confirmation that the item will be given to you if unclaimed. If they refuse take the matter further.

I dont believe it will be donated to charity.

Best thing you can do if you find any lost property anywhere is take it to the local police station. That way you can maybe ask for a reward if the person claims it, or you can get the property back if its unclaimed.

*cough* i woulda kept it *cough**cough*

but if i lost it i would go back to the place where i lost it but i wouldnt think to go to the store again.

Well done you for doing the right thing though!

the store should have a policy on lost/found - you need to go to the store - and ask for the item to be processed as a 'found item' you then need to give all your information over - name , address, telephone number - then you need to tell them that if item is not collected within 3 months you will return to claim the 'lost goods'. After 3 months you go back and ask for the item that you handed in on 'xxx' date - you give over your name and proof of who you are and they should then give you the item if it hasnt already been collected - be prepared for it to have been though.

Go back to the shop and ask for them to hand it to the police. Then you can declare it as found at your local police station. If after a certain period no-one claims it and the original owner cannot be identified, then it legally becomes yours. Taking it back to the shop will only means it stays in the manager's office for a few weeks until he/she keeps it.

I wouldn't have minded if they'd at least said thank you. I did ask them "how would I know if it had been claimed or not if they didn't bother taking my number to get back to me" The manageress just shrugged her shoulders and walked away as if the matter was closed. So I just walked out the shop, without the found item. Maybe I should have given my phone number and asked them to call me if anyone had come in claiming they'd lost something.

Unfortunately the Shopping Centre was in London (near Sheppards Bush) and I live a good 60 miles away!, also didn't know where the nearest police station was.

Ah Well... Live and learn.
