I dont think the tax disc is valid unless its displayed

thats what i thought - even tho i've paid for tax disc (and have the receipt) i assume i can still be done for not displaying a valid tax disc?

The wording of the relevent act is now 'failure to display without due cause' the police can check and know it is taxed (or not), if you have lost the tax disc it would be in your interests to report it as lost to the police. So technically you can't drive a car with out a valid excise licence... but without due cause... a replacement has been applied for.
So it doesn't stop you getting a failure to display penalty, but does give you a 'get out of jail card'

It is an offence to not be displaying a current tax disc even if you have paid for it.
As long as you are not parking it on the road you should be okay...

you can be fined for not displaying. if you havent already applied for a replacement i know with logbooks if you tell the dvla you never received it i.e it got lost in the post you dont get charged the £25 replacement fee. Im not sure how tax disks are sent tho, if not recorded worth a try.

I would have thought the risk of getting caught for that would be minimal since they usually catch you for driving an untaxed vehicle by scanning your number plate (and if they scanned yours they would see that your car is taxed). If you have lost the disc and ordered another surely that is due cause anyway. I wouldn't worry about it I am always late putting my tax disc in my car.
