Low cost flights to airports close to... anything!

Fancy going somewhere this weekend, been looking on the Ryanair/BMI etc websites but as we all know, the majority of these airports are in the middle of no where! Does anyone know of anywhere that is ACTUALLY near the place they advertise?! I.e. is Montpellier actually Montpellier or is it 60 miles away?! Yes, I could go through the dozens of airports, look them up on Google maps and then look up what's nearby, but I don't have all day so if anyone's got any experience, that'd be great!
Don't mind where it is - France, Spain, Netherlands, Norway etc... where!

Glasgow (Prestwick) is great for Troon/Ayr, not so good for Glasgow.
Bremen airport (Germany) is very close to Bremen (10mins on a tram), which is a lovely city and the football stadium and fans are great too. Amazing architecture.

A friend of mine actually went to Bremen last week... she said it was very industrial and full of drunk girls trying to sell alcohol on the street!! Thanks for the suggestions, do you know of any more?

Umm... no. It doesn't quite work like that! Ryanair fly to Dusseldorf... But it's actually Weeze and 70km from Dusseldorf. If you flew to Birmingham airport you'd be annoyed if you ended up in Wales...

Malaga airport is quite close for the Costa del Sol.

my point was there are about 100 destinations of which most are near or in the destination. I just named two but would be here all day naming the rest.

I thought the Paris airport for Ryanair was at Beauvais

I totally understand that. I flew into London Stanstead once. Nice airport - but where the heck is it really!? Took me ages to get into London !! I was annoyed and should have listened to my instinct and stuck with Heathrow. Plus the taxi fares are ridiculous from these airports. Scam.

There should be some trading standards (whatever it's called) to clearly name these airports to their locations not their nearest or most convenient location.

should have got the train (40 mins to central london). London Gatwick is the same (25 mins). Surely people are clued up enough to look at the location of where they are flying to?

takes far longer getting out of heathrow (20 minute train journey to follow too) than stansted.

and what a nightmare it would be booking a flight with names such as weeze etc rather than dusseldorf

Wrong AGAIN. Ryanair call it Dusseldorf, not Weeze.

That was an oversight on my part - I usually check when going to other countries but I thought (for some reason) that it wouldn't be that far away as it was called London Stanstead. (d'oh)

And I didn't feel like dragging my luggage on the express train to Liverpool Street then changing onto 2 tube lines and a walk to get home.

You live and learn I guess.

Gerona isn't too far from Barcelona. Going there myself this weekend. :)
#16
i think it was a straightforward and relaxing 65 min coach trip from gerona to barcelona - i thoroughly enjoyed the trip and got a decent hotel just off las ramblas.
#17
How about Pisa. Airport is pretty much in city centre & it's a legend place (_;)

It's actually quite a long bus ride but worth it if you haven't been to Spain's second city before.
#19
Alicante airport is just outside of Alicante and is only minutes from the nearest beach.
#20
Berlin & Bratislava are 2 more good options & Airports are close to city.
#21
Amsterdam Schiphol is really near to the center (Dam Sq area). And if you're sneaky you can get on the 15min ride train for free :D

I actually think Prestwick is really easy for Glasgow as the airport has a direct link to the train station and has you at central in 45 mins.

Santander (Spain) is very close to the city. 10 mins on the bus to the centre. Plenty on nice places to visit. Loads off shops and the football stadium about another 10 mins from the bus station. Have flown in loads off times from Stansted. Loads off cheap places to stay. We used to stay at the Hostel Mexicana. Basic rooms but were only £15 a night, room only.

Thanks for the suggestions! Going to look at Bratislava and Santander!

Bratislava is awesome - Santander is not a nice place. People are very unfriendly. Enjoy wherever you go :)

I've decided to go to Sardinia! Can anyone recommend some good hotels/places to visit?

I must have been 50 times and never had meet anyone who was like that. If you book Santander let me know and ill try and point you in the right direction for places to eat. Ill get direction for the american bar, then the square that everyone goes to after all the pubs shut.

Different people have different opinions of places obviously. I have only been twice & only met one person who was friendly ( possibly because i was in his shop buying cigarettes ). Bilbao, just up the road is totally different - lovely city & friendly people. ( Just my opinion though ) .

I agree about the cigs. He used to ask us to come back to get ours after the shop had closed. Then he used to take us out for drinks. We went back to see the house he had built a few years ago off the back off all the custom he used to get when the flights were 1p each. We couldnt believe it when we say the house. My mate still jokes to this day about it.

The Rome campino airport wasn't that far from Rome, plenty of bus links from it to the centre of Rome, think they took about 40 mins but way only 20 mins in a taxi and was cheap to get to the centre too.

Malaga is the main airport for Costa del sol and Ryan air fly there. Come out the airport and go over the bridge you get to the train station. V cheap and regular trains to all the usual resorts.
