whats the maximum output your Mac can do? Thats the limitation here I think.

I would say yes - OS X is very good at detecting monitors and if it's supported it should be able to use it.

Chrishill - the only limitation is the OS itself and I know from experience it'll output at 1920 x 1080 ;)

ah cool, I wasn't sure what the max output on a mac was, I was thinking along the lines of needing both a graphics card/chip capable of outputting 1920 x 1080 and a monitor capable of displaying it :)

Maximum is 1920 x 1200 (as stated by other members above)

Stated in specification:
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP5

Graphics and video support
Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors

The manual says (on Page 66) "Note: Your MacBook supports external display resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 on Apple
DVI displays and up to 1600 x 1200 on VGA displays."

so I'm going to say check page 66 of your manual :D

Im aware of that but a quick google search shows that apparently that is when using dvi and using vga its less

Ah thanks for clearing that up.
Surely that'd be the first place you'd look...? lol

Now that's sorted,
Has anyone seen the new functions of iLife '09? I was literally drooling at the automatic face recognition (not just detection) on iPhoto. It's out at the end of the month but I cannot wait for that!

I have iWork '09 but that's just boring compared to iLife '09!

[EDIT] Sorry, didn't see your additional question. Please finish your enquiries before I hijack your thread :)

wait a minute carley has managed to get 1900x1200 by using vga?
#11
We need a screenshot.

carley are you using a mini-dvi to vga adapter and then the vga cable that came with the monitor. It doesnt make sense according to the manual because its higher...
#13
lol well we don't really need one, your word is just fine.
But one of this perhaps if you want?

So you have a VGA outputting 1900x1200 for definite?

[EDIT] Damn you're fast!!

I noticed

im gonna ring apple and ask them whether its possible

Well hard to understand the guy but he seemed to say that it would work at the max resolution of 1920 x 1080 using vga. didn't have too much faith in him though so im a bit stuck...

yeah good idea on the phone to someone else now would you agree that the monitor seems like a good deal?
Or would it be better to wait and get one with dvi when it comes up?

thanks ill do that just wait for a good deal (not vga) thansk a lot for all your help
