Macbook white screen of death problem? Help!

Hi, I was on my Macbook 13in (2008) today and it was working ok. Suddenly the screen started kinda flashing and rolling and then just went to the dreaded white screen. i have tried reset pram and start in safe mode as well as start in single user, no luck. All i get when i switch on is white screen.

I have googled it but still none the wiser. I have read it might be logic board (expensive?) or hard drive but the hard drive seems to be activated when i turn on (i get that accelerating sound)

Any Mac heads on here have a clue what i should do?

I don't have the original snow leopard install disk because as i said bought 2nd hand. Might it be worth buying and trying a fresh install? I have read sometimes this works with white screen problems, others have said it made no difference.

Ps i bought second hand and so don't have applecare or warrenty

What do you get if you start up holding Option key?

Have you tried connecting an external monitor?

Still get white screen when i hold option or shift key. I have a HP screen i use with my Mac mini but i presume i would need some kinda of adapter to use this monitor with the Macbook.

try putting restore disc 1 in and restarting from that

if it works its the hard drive if not then its the logic board(which is uneconomical to repair on macbooks)

edit,if you dont have the original discs then the only option is to take it to a apple store for them to have a gander, rather than spending any money

It's probably the logic board by the sounds of it, cheaper to buy a new MacBook if that's the case.

Ok firstly thank you all so much for taking the time to reply and offer help ( i love this site )

Good news, after trying different stuff all day and scrolling mac forums i finally tried starting up in single user mode once more although it stayed on white screen 20 times before. This time i got through to the black screen and used the fsck -y system a couple of times then rebooted. and success :-D now running disk utilities to repair any permissions.Still accept any after care advice you might have but so far back on track once again thanks all rep for you all.
