Hi all,

A short question that I have been reflecting on and would be interested in other perspectives.

What gives your life meaning and how do you retain focus on it in the face of other pressures/expectations.

Thank you!

We all have different meanings that inspire us. Sometimes are not known.

Often, hidden loyalties we are not conscious of hold us back in powerful ways.

One of the ways to find and resource a meaningful journey is to attend Systemic Family Constellations.

my meaning of my life is my child and family and I don't have big expectations because you can hardly achieve those but yes they're are a lot of pressure on you but best is just get on with it and do what you feel right for you...I. e if you're child is ill then I focus on him...his food etc and not what my house looks like...I'll wait for someone to watch him then do it even if it piles up

This is a very deep question op. I have had to ask this question myself last year. Not an easy question to answer.

I find that the answer to this question will change continually throughout life depending on your situation at the time of the question.

For me, growing up, it was definately money. Nothing else mattered, just money and lots of it. I needed the money badly though as i had none and so it had to change.

However, now that i have got the money i wanted, although i am still motivated by money, it has taken second place in what i believe is important in life. Now for me, it is all about relaxing and taking time out to enjoy life and not let it pass me by.

People have become very important to me. I am not a loner and i dont function well when i am on my own. The worse nightmare for me would be to be stranded on a desert island on my own even if it was a five star desert island with all the services included for free. Lol X)

So having people to love and who love me is now a greater focus than before.

You create your own pressures & expectations.
You can release all the stress by just accepting yourself for what you have & what may come,so be it.
My children & wife are my main reasons for living.
Money won't make you a better person if you don't have a family who can turn to you for good honest support. It also does nothing for you if you lose a loved one or you have a health issue that can't be mended.
My Granda never had a lot of money & he & my Gran had 4 daughters & 4 sons.My Granda deep down knew he was a millionaire in family ways & not money ways.I know if he was still with us,he would not change it for the world.

Hi all

Many thanks for your responses. Like many of you, I get meaning from my family. But I am really interested in how you manage to stay focused as there are ways of justifying behaviour that do the opposite. I.e. I must protect my family by working long hours (and hence trying to keep up with people who may not have a family/may be less focused upon them). Accepting one's flaws is really hard also - how did you do it?

For me, if i just bundle along, i would find life very boring. I always need focus and motivation. I need to wake up every day with intention.

I dont actually understand your question. Are you saying that you are getting upset because you have to work long hours? And what are your flaws?

Systemic family constellations? Is that like looking up at the stars without a telescope?

Does quantum entanglement mean everything is pre determined? I don't know. But, If so, so are our pressures and expectations.

Necessity is the Mother of invention. Some Pressures and expectations can drive you to excel.

Don't be too quick to "release all the stress by just accepting" that you'll never achieve your desired purpose.

Many things along your life journey will possibly stop or change the goals and dreams you had at 20 years old. Relationships, Friends, Finances and children to name a few can all make massive changes to your life and the path your on. There will always be someone who has more than you and someone who has less than you. I've made many mistakes by trusting so called friends and family over the years who have cost me alot financially, but money is not everything in the world.. yes it helps but can it buy the love of a mother, father, wife, husband, son, daughter, sister or brother..
I'm sure at times life will have no current real meaning. But it's the future we can plan towards to give it meaning.
It's about fixing/improving parts of your life step by step to give it meaning. If that's a new job, new relationship or effort in current relationship, new home, excersise plan etc All those add up..

Life can be a hard slog and it doesn't always have to have meaning . If I concentrated on the rubbish life has thrown at me these last few years and contemplated on the meaning and how to cope I would have been driven mad with grief and anger. That would have been no use to anyone and won't put food on the table. Sometimes you just get on with it because like it or not there is no choice.

some posters on here seem awfully similar in their opinion including the OP. Not sure what the 'meaning' is, hidden in that.

Looking at life now I'm retirement age puts everything in a different perspective.i've gone through the lacking confidence teenage hell; the cash strapped young married; the running round in circles working mum; the struggle of coping with teenagers whist looking after elderly parents etc. You know what? They are all just phases, every one of them passes, the good and the bad, and you learn and change with each one.

The one lesson to take with you from the start is just - be comfortable with yourself. No one gets it right all the time and it's no one else's job to make you happy, so if you like the person you see looking back at you in the mirror, then the odds are other people will too. Maybe becoming the person you always wanted to be is all the motivation you need.
