Major Computer Problem

Ok so past few weeks my computer has been playing up as sometimes when i turn it on of a morning it stops on the screen were you choose the BIOS option and the computer starts clicking really loud, so i cant even choose BIOS option or nothing as everything is froze, i found a fix for this and that was to kick the hard drive and it would boot properly.

Anyway tonight it did it again and being very late i just pushed on the hard drive and it worked, great i though, next thing i get an error message about my e: drive which is my second hard drive saying all data lost so when i went in to my computer it had a red question mark across my E drive and it wouldn't let me open it, so i was pretty annoyed and hough i would just put some downloads on and go to sleep so when they started i got an error message saying invalid file path and i even changed there destination to download to (used to be E) but still nothing :x

Please help.

Was the download software or some of your system files on drive E:? Looks like the E drive is gone forever. Hope you backed anything important up. Looks like you may need to install the software again.

I've got the name of a great recovery tool for problems like this unfortunately i'm at work at the minute. It won't fix your harddrive but you'll be able to get all your data off it, then you'll want to take it to the recycle dump.

happened to me- its best to just to replace it and no point trying to fix it as likely to happen in future and possibility of losing files again!
i brought this for £74 with 5yrs warranty

will that act as a main hard drive?

You can boot from a USB harddrive (if your motherboard has a USB boot option), but it would be incredibly slow and not worthwhile at all.

I think ROKO was intending it to be used to backup your important files.

Windows won't allow you to use a USB hard drive as the boot drive, you can boot from the drive and you'll get a bit into the loading screen before it bails out.

Rubbish. You can boot from a usb hard drive or even a flash drive. I have a flash drive with XP installed so I can use it on most usb bootable machines.

is it complicated to instal xp on a usb drive?

the standard xp boot process doesnt support usb hd

apparently u have "make it xp bootable"

couldnt instal xp despite motherboard supporting usb boot

Stick a new drive (s - depending on if e:\ is logical or not) in. Beforehand you could try Knoppix (Linux boot CD), see if it can read it, if so copy it off.

Some (I do say some here :) ), have had some success with taking a dodgy drive, wrapping it up carefully and slapping it in the freezer for a spell. It's supposed to let you get data off before binning .
