http://www.switched.com/2008/05/22/online-social-status-can-complicate-real-world-relationships/

If you use a social networking Web site like Facebook or MySpace, just how explicit are you with your personal details, especially your relationship status?

Some users have been getting themselves into awkward social situations, even provoking problems in their personal relationships, all due to status messages that sometimes reveal more or sometimes less -- than they would want or intend.

Changing the status from "in a relationship" to "single" got one man into hot water with a very large circle of online friends and caused his ex-girlfriend significant embarrassment when many of those friends reached out to her.

Others find themselves pressured by girlfriends or boyfriends to change "single" status to "in a relationship," perhaps to announce to the world (the online one, that is) that they are, in a sense, off the market.

One psychoanalyst says social networking sites can add pressures to a relationship as it develops. Making the status public for all to see alters the dynamic between people and breaks down some of the intimacy.

So, how much do you reveal to all your networked friends?

personally I dont use these networking sites...find it all abit boring...OH does though and it irritates me when he puts up family photos on there....you never know who is looking at your photos...a bit creepy I think!!!

Facebook isn't too bad with regards to "randomers" browsing your profile. On facebook no one can see ANY facebook page unless they are logged in, your profile is automatically set to private so that only your friends can see it (people who you have added) and you can select friends who can only view your "limited profile" (which I think means they can see your profile but not contact details/photos).

I use facebook and so does my OH i have no issues with him having lots of female friends on there im just not the jealous type anyhow.

I've got back in touch with so many old school friends who regualry meet up in town for a few drinks althougth im not participating in that at the mo as im nearly 8 months pregnant

theres no problem with family photos etc as you can set them to private and only the people you want to see them can.

The problem with things like facebook is its not facebooks fault if you get found out or whatever its down to the individual and how they go about themselves on things like that

one of my OH friends maridge broke down as he found his misses was cheating throu facebook, but its not facebooks fault she cheated that was down to her if your not up to anything how can you get caught out?

A friend of mine found out her fiance was lying to her through facebook, as she was suspecting he was having an affair and upon close research through facebook found that to be the truth. I think facebook reveals a lot of personal information, even if you have private settings, out of all the hundreds of people on your friend's list how many would you really want to tell your relationship status or about your everyday life.

Some people tend to do it for showing off reasons but i am sure when a person is going through a break up or divorce etc it is not ideal to find everyone comforting you. I would never disclose such information on a website, some things should just be kept private.

There should be some sort of facebook app that sends you an email when your friends change their relationship status to single. Good oppertunity to catch them on the rebound... :whistling:

i was watching bbc tech program called click few months ago and what they were saying that these facebook applications actually track our data, everything we type more or less on the profile page. this then gets back sent to the application makers. facebook has covered themself in thier terms and conditions becuase the applications are actually wirtten by facebook themself. still- very wrong and hardly anyone knows that there getting tracked like this.
