I was looking at the 3 for £5 deal in M&S today, and I spotted rump steak priced at £0.78. Now clearly this was too cheap.
I took it to the till anyway, and stated to the girl working the till that I have steak here and I would like it scanned to see if it scans at £0.78.

The girl scanned it and it came up as £0.78 but she would not sell it to me because she say it was clearly too cheap. She took it away somewhere into the back of the store instead.

I was hoping for a bargain!

The steak would just go to someone of the staff at the store, becuase the steaks were priced elsewhere and there was no way the steak was going to go back to be re-priced.

So, did the staff get my bargain, or should the till girl have sold it to me at the price stated?

No apparently a store does not have to sell you anything if they don't want to. :? I thought otherwise but this happened to me in B&Q they flatley refused at it is there right :x

Crikey.. Surely they should have honoured the price on the packet?

Wow.. I really didn't know that. How mean!

No they do not have to sell to you at the price, if its incorrectly priced.
#5
you should have kept quiet while buying it and hoped she didn't notice

As above.........they don't have to honour the price as it's a invitation to treat but i bet she nabs it for herself. If you'd have asked for a manager then he/she would have let you have it as they are great customer service usually.

Its a pity they did'nt have self service tills :p

Interesting rules here for retail pricing:

http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?r.l1=1073861169&r.l3=1074016261&type=RESOURCES&itemId=1073792325&r.l2=1074400662&r.s=sc

I would have probably gone back, got another pack off the shelf and gone to a different till

trick is too hand em the correct money with the product, once money has been taken its a deal

It's correct that when you take an item to the till, you are offering to buy - and the shop does not have to accept your offer. When there is an error like this, goodwill usually comes into play. I would have thought they would let you have it and then clear the shelf asap so that they could correct the labels.

oh dear thats really bad, i alwasy thought they had to sell to you for the price it says. i work for next and have always been told we have too, but then i suppose its up to the mangers if they want to or not
#12
I always believed that the retailer in question had to sell you the said item for the price stated?

thats strange. If the item they are selling has a description and the item has not been tampered with then they have to sell you it at that price. If they refuse to sell you it then they have to take all of the incorrect priced products off display for 24hours before they can resell. They've totally ripped you off............the staff are having rump steak this weekend and have filled their bags ...oh well better luck next time

If this ever happens to you again, then I would ask them to check and prove to you how they are sure that it is incorrect.

alternatively, drive to another m&s and buy loads because they will not update the sysem until after midnight anyway. lol

I bought 20 x packs of baby vests for £1 each because they were changing the packaging at M&S, the staff didn't want to sell me them but I got them in the end. Its only because the lady at the till wanted them and she couldnt believe she had missed the bargain.

I didn't say all of them were this price, I only said one of them was this price!

But thanks for the replies.
