My dads uncle who is 84 got 5 numbers with a lucky dip, went to the post office to get his winnings, now being a little forgetful and in a rish not to miss the bus he handed the ticket over and what did he get in return for his 5 matching numbers ? £2.50 he is on the brink of dementia but now realizes the mistake he's made.

We have been in contact with Camelot who can trace the ticket and let us know if its been cashed in but apart from that not very much help at all.

we have the date/time and place where it was taken into .
The woman has even been identified but apart from that we havent taken matter much further. the prize money is 2 and ahalf thousand.

im looking for advice as to what to do next

I would go back to the shop and demand the ticket back, isnt it also classed as theft and im sure the police can get involved

are you absolutely positive before you start accusing someone of theft?

is he not thinking of the lotto +5 thing?

My wife did that the other day and won £2.50 for three numbers.

Why is a man with dementia being allowed to go and cash a lottery ticket worth £2,500?!? Couldn't a trusted, younger, more able (no offence) relative done it for him.

Most shops have a policy of checking your money before you go and it is probably going to be a case of your dads uncle word against the cashiers. Or maybe have the police seize the video tape. I know these video cameras in post offices are not fantastic but surely you would be able to tell the difference between £2.50 and £2,500!

Good luck

It's simple - if the ticket was worth £2500 then the shop couldn't cash it. They have a limit well below that (couple of hundred I think) and above has to be done with Camelot directly.

As long as you can get the proof that the ticket was handed over then the shop assistant will have some explaining to do.

How much did you win?
Up to £100
You can claim your prize from any National Lottery retailer upon presentation of your ticket. The retailer will validate your ticket and allow you to check the validation slip if requested. Check it against the amount to be paid out and return it to your retailer.

Over £100 and up to £500
National Lottery retailers can pay prizes over £100 and up to £500 at their discretion upon presentation of your ticket. If they are not able to do so - and your ticket has not been validated - you can return to the same retailer when funds are available, go to another retailer, or go to a National Lottery Post Office. If your ticket has been validated, you must return to the same retailer when funds are available.

Taken from the lottery site, there is no maximum upper limit. Shops can pay out what they want if it is authorised by camelot

(1) Subject to the provisions of these Rules and save in the case of Offline Direct Debit, in particular Rules 4(D)(20) and (21), Retailers are authorised and required to make payment in cash of Prizes of £100 or less, and may make at their discretion payment in cash of Prizes from £100 to £500 (or such higher amount as authorised by the Company). In the event that a Prize winner submits a Ticket to a Retailer which is then scanned into the Central Computer System and the Prize is in excess of the payment authority of that Retailer, the Player shall be advised by the Retailer of the appropriate method to claim the Prize.

When the ticket was scanned, the lottery machine should of went mental. Playing noises and that.

Ive seen it happen before when someone has handed over a ticket when its a substantial sum. Theres no hiding for the shop clerk to nick that when the machine makes that noise.
