Mean and stingy moneysaving

Most of us here seem to like a bargain, that's why we are members, to get a good deal. I am all up for moneysaving but not too the extreme.

But when it comes to moneysaving what is the most stingy-est thing you have seen or heard?

An ex colleague of mine lived off baked beans to try to save money and pay his mortgage back twice as fast? Another one, for the same reason, used to drink hot water instead of tea. And we once caught him skip diving for a pair of work boots another worker had thrown away. ;)
I'm from Yorkshire but even I find that stingy (_;)

Seen loads but my biggest hate is the scum that go in a restaurant, eat a 3 course meal and then kick off at the end just to receive money off their bill.

A former lady friend of mine, getting into a colossal email argument with an eBay seller for combining postage on a couple of items without passing the saving on. The value of the goods, £80. The value of the postage, something along the lines of 50p.

Although, another absurdity I've seen is women trying to add an extra few pennies so they can get an extra reward point on their store loyalty card. During my days at Safeway, I once had a woman ask if I could add an extra 4p to a bill, so she could get her single extra point. A single point worth one penny.

Melting multiple part-used candles down, putting into a small glass with some left over wick and making into a new candle?

An ex bf used to stop the pump a few times when filling up the car with petrol so he could shake out the dribbles then start again.

I used to bring my own tea bags to college and buy a cup of hot water instead of tea.

Not sure if this is stingey - more like thrift. Fuel is now so bl00dy dear, i can see his thinking. As for your idea, for a penniless student - you had a very good money saving idea (guess you must like black tea though?)

Giving waitor or waitress a 1p tip just to round it up to a whole number. F*ck em, they don't need a tip! I would hate to go to America with those greedy bums expecting a $20 tip for doing their job.

People who battle to get to the reduced shelf in Asda etc.

People who are happy to accept drinks when drinking aspart of a round, but suddenly become expert at bar-avoidance tactics when it's their turn to shell out.

In America most waitresses are paid less than the minimum wage and they also pay tax on their tips and most people happily pay between 10-20% through choice which isn't supprising as the food and service is usually great

As a Chef for 20 years i see what goes on in these places with Customers. The average person will tip around 5-10%,but you get some people who never Tip.
I worked on Xmas day when we had a family of 6 paying £49.95 p/person & the Young kids ran all over the place for them serving them & they even dressed-up as Elf's etc to make the day better for the Customers. After the Family had ate, they handed over £300 & waited for the 30p Change & on such a day as Xmas day & not appreciating what the kids did for them is out of order.

PS: I wish this Family all the worst luck of 2011 ;)

I think the £300 payment was more than enough to show their appreciation.

I NEVER tip. For one, it's unfair, why should the woman who brings you your meal get a tip, whilst the cashier in a supermarket scans all your stuff, helps you pack gets nothing?

That's a greedy point of view. Expecting more money out of the already over the top 300 quid pay out. Yet all the food in the restaurant is no doubt shipped in from a mega warehouse, where you could buy the equivalent in Tesco for £1, and have it in a restaurant for £15.

And they dressed up as Elves to make it better for customers? I work part time at Tesco and at Xmas pretty much everyone dressed up, for fun, not to get a measly tip.

I hate going to restaurants now because the staff are always expecting more money. I have paid £25 for this meal already, which wasn't worth it, why should I have to pay more, just for the waitor.... Just get a different job.

I agree with tipping a bum, they have the least paid jobs around.

A woman friend's boyfriend, when they are out (and no, I couldn't believe it until I'd seen it!) demands the difference if she has a large wine instead of a normal glass. Bear in mind that he earns in excess of £40kpa so he's not exactly strapped.

Now I like to save a little where I can but FFS! Your girlfriend!!!

I agree tipping is out of hand. I never tip people for bringing my food over. I tip if people have gone out of there way to be helpful or I just feel the service was fantastic.

I went to a bar in London, ordered 2 drinks and it was 12 quid. I thought that's a bit dear an there was a 1.85 service charge!!! All he did was pour 2 pints!

I always have a large glass of wine and if my bf behaved like your friend.

I would definitely dump him.

One of the stingiest people I have ever known was my old neighbour. They used to knock on my door for all sorts of stuff instead of going to the shops. I always knew what they were having to eat because the children were sent round to ask if I had a spare tin of this or packet of that. If the kids fell over they had to come to my door for plasters. If they ran out of loo roll, they would come round for a packet of my Dixcel or whatever....then bring me Smartprice stuff the next day.

Don't think there was anything they didn't get by sending the kids to knock on doors and ask for it!
