Mechanic Advice needed......Honda Civic Auto

We have an old "J" reg, Honda Civic Auto - which we have recently taken to a garage as the engine was overheating..... the mechanic said we would need a new radiator which was leaking, so he fitted that - when my missus went to collect the car today, he informed her that the head gasket was also buggered and would need replacing at a cost of £400 !!! This seems a hell of a lot of money for a gasket.... can someone with some mechanical knowledge advise me whether this cost is about right for this sort of work, if not how much should i be expecting to pay. Why is it such an expensive job, excuse my ignorance.....

my head blew and needed to be skimmed and mine cost about 300 pounds at the time i think it depends on the cost of the full gasket kit and the labour involved but i would suggest you ring round a few garages as some are quite a bit cheaper than others

£400 is a lot of money but i've heard people paying over £1000 for it  It's not the parts, it's the labour that you're paying for.

when my gasket went the mechanic showed me that my oil had gone like mustard in the rocker box which is where you would pour the oil in to top up you could check.

Why do old people and young people buy these cars! My inlaws have one they are 70 something!

As stated above. You have to remove the top half of the engine. You need to check if skimming the head is included (I doubt it, but you never know) Most of the cost is labour (about 75-80% I'd say)
