mechanical problem, can anyone diagnose the problem?

I was driving back home in the rain today and my back wiper has suddenly gone kaput.
I turned the stick to operate it and heard a sort of "eurgh" noise like it was trying to start wiping and then a thud, nothing happened and back wiper is dead.

I have a renault megane vvt 54 reg.

Could it be a fuse?

Here's hoping someone can shed some light!

sounds like the spindle from the motor has probably seized and the motor has now given up!

When you switch it on, can you hear the motor spinning or is it dead?
#3
Typical Renault electrical gremlins probably :-( - I would imagine the motor has gone as Renault electrics are renowned for their unreliability !

It's completely dead, couldn't hear anything when I kept trying it whilst on the move and at a stop.

Almost def the motor then as otherwise you would hear it whirring :-(

It's typical as it only had it's MOT a week ago.

Thanks for your help.
Does anyone have an idea on the cost of replacing it (parts and labour)? Having a tight few months money wise so could have done without my motor going:?

Just tried google for a quick reference and it doesnt sound too major a job ...

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Replace_a_renault_megane_wiper_motor

But whatever you do make sure you use your local friendly garage / mechanic as Renault dealers will charge an extortionate labour rate - it cost me over £60 to replace a headlamp bulb on my Megane - and the nice AA man replaced the next one in less than 10 mins for less than £10 !!!

Altho you may be very lucky and find it is just a fuse lol :-) - check your fuse box first - do you know how to find it ?

a friends father in law took his car to the renault garage because the windscreen washers wouldn't spray

fault - no water!
cost to fix - £23.00 for filling water resevoir!

Very interesting read...
Will have a tinker in the morning to double check no noise and that it's the motor, may even have a go doing it myself but might wait for my brother to come up for help!

:w00t: £60 for fitting a bulb, that's obscene, I steer clear of dealers as can't afford their prices!
Halfords did a great job of fitting a front light bulb for me (they go in through the wheel arch), cost £10 for bulb and fitting, Nationwide Autocentres quoted £30 as they said the car would have to be taken apart to get to it!

Re. the fuse, I don't know location, would it be stated in the manual or don't they make it that easy?!

Great, I have a manual for the car so will check in there, thank you so much for your help (rep will be left), don't blame you for not going out, not even my cat wants to go out, he's presently superglued to the fire!
Thanks also goes to everyone else who've commented, I don't know a great deal about cars and I'm sure some garages would try and take advantage of this so like to go with some knowledge and be ready for battle!

Happy to help :-D

I've been taken for a mug before by garages (a long time ago now lol - never again !!) so now I always try to make sure I have some idea what's going on the other side of the steering wheel :)

Fingers crossed you get it sorted quickly and easily

I fail to see the relevance:thinking:

Shhhhh  ;-)

Rear wiper is not an MOT testable item or even a legal requirement to have functioning. If cost is an issue, leave it until funds allow. Would try checking fuse first but the fact it made a eurgh noise first does not sound too healthy (a euw euw or squuch sqaach noise might have been simpler :p - only taking thup iss!!). Fuse box should be on the left hand side as you open the glovebox.
