Anybody got any tips on setting this up?

I've followed all the guides and got as far as seeing my video files on the screen but when i select it it says something like "Unable to play media..."

Any help appreciated.

what format are the video files?

as far as I know, only .wmv videos are supported by default, but I've just googled and found this guide which should help you play anything...

Cheers.

Some are wmv, some mpg, some avi.

I did some reading myself and found a couple of programs, one called My Movies and one called Transcode 360. Both very messy and difficult to use.

yeah, I don't think much to the media center thing at all to be honest - watching films on the 360 is a right pain because its so noisy!

Might try plugging my external directly in see if that helps. Or VGA cable from laptop to my tv!

I've got a s-video -> scart cable which works quite well, but I found a DVD player that supports DIVX in Argos for £25 and I've never looked back

Get a new one, only thing noisy on mine is the DVD drive, though it seems to have quietened down now it's worn in (only 2 weeks old)

To OP, you need to open up WMP11 to enable sharing of media though I have Vista so might be different.

In Network and Sharing Centre make sure Media Sharing is enabled for the 360, and check your firewall isn't blocking the connection

Use an original xbox for your media centre, so much better than using a 360.

but it uses iTunes

I get complaint after complaint about iTunes....people record their entire record collection into iTunes buy a new mp3 player and find out they can't put their music on their new mp3 player. I just laugh at them.
