However, someone pointed out that a PS3 could also be suitable, and can be used to browse the internet now and again with an external keyboard attached.

Clearly, a PS3 is much cheaper, but, is it really a suitable replacement?
I'm going to be mainly watching movies on disk, or from an external hard drive, and occassionally browsing the web.
I don't intend to play games, as I already have other consoles.

What do you reckon? Which should I go for? a £320 dedicated PC or a console that costs under £250?

Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat, upgrading from my xbox xbmc...I am tilting more towards the PS3 to be honest with you, plus there is a few games that I would like to play...

I'd get something like:- http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z106/emasu/medpc.jpg

The 780G chipset is very good for HTPC stuff, along with the Quad Athlon and bags of storage should do well.

Each to their own I suppose.

and the ps3 is easily upgradable, which is also cheap to do.

PS3 now also has BBC iplayer, & I reckon there'll be lots more add ons with future firmware updates.

I prefer the PC as it's extremely flexible, it can handle pretty much any video format as well as any streaming service such as Iplayer, 4oD, Sky etc. The PS3 has recently got Iplayer and the 360 is meant to be getting Sky player but they can't really come close to a PC here. The PC can also function as a NAS allowing PCs to connect over shares and the consoles to pick up media across the network.

This is what I am leaning towards.
Mostly the flexibility to handle anything that comes along.
