Memory foam mattress - topper or full mattress?

I've been suffering with a bad back for a few years now, mainly when i'm in bed, i wake up in pain most nights.

I have been told memory foam will help with the problem and so was wondering if anyone has any experience with either the mattresses or the toppers.

Obviously with the topper being cheaper i'd like to try and get one of them so can anyone recommend a place to get a good one?

We bought our memory mattress last month for £250,may sound expensive but if it cures my bad back then its money well spent. Recommended

They are very very good. Go for the mattress, and go for a good one, with at least 2-3 inches of mem foam.

I've had a top-of-the-range Tempur mattress for 2 years now and if anything my back may be worse. In all honesty I would go back to a regular firm mattress had the Tempur not cost so much!

Get one. Our mattress was so hard and we couldn't sleep. Now we sleep like babies.

We got ours from Argos. Bargain to be had!

Go to a good bed shop first and ask questions. There are some great beds on the market that help in this area. I hurt my back when I was 19 and am still suffering for it. I tried all the usual products to no avail. The bed I bought a few years ago is great. What works for one will not always work for another though.

If your existing mattress is too firm, you can soften it with a topper. If it's too soft you need a new mattress.

I'm a case in point. Doesn't work for me.

yeah i've tried everything, bought a new standard mattress last year as i thought that would help but it didn't.The only thing that stops it at the moment is strong pain killers, but i don't want to have to keep taking them

Memory foam mattress toppers are fab, we have one on our bed and it's honestly one of the best things we've ever bought!

i paid a lot of money for a memory foam mattress (about 3 inch deep memory foam) and found it made no difference to my back but i put a topper on and its brilliant, used one on sons bed too as he had a really cheap mattress at one point that was really uncomfortable. you can get them for about £50 from b & m and they are good also make sure you have a good pillow as that will help too

Bear in mind most "memory foam" mattresses are between 2-3 inches memory foam on one side only, the rest being standard foam, meaning the mattress cannot be turned over.

IMHO Go for a 3-4 inch topper, it's a lot cheaper (i paid £60 for a 3 inch double) and you can turn the thing over plus the fact that if for some reason you need to get rid of it you won't have spent several hundred £'s for it. Just remember though ideally you want a firm mattress for this type of topper.

I have a memory foam mattress and would say im def glad we bought one but i would advise to go into a bed shop and test the matresses as theyre all different, you get diff quality and firmness etc... The only complaint I have about it is that unlike a normal matress its one sided so you cant flip it over the other side but I guess thats because you dont need to since it retains its shape...

I would totally disagree with your view of Tempur,,,My wife and I both have medical issues which the mattress improved for us both,,,I will agree with you over the cost,,,However, with Tempur you don't have to pay the VAT provided you sign the VAT exemption form which does make a huge difference in the final price paid, provided of course its a genuine medical problem you suffer,,,Additionally with Tempur, they will let you have the mattress for 90 days trial so taking any risk from the purchase being incorrect for you,,,I have and do recommend Tempur to friends and family and those that have bought one also swear by them like we do,,,Our only complaint with it is the difficulty getting out of bed in the morning being so comfortable,,,But we can live with that,,,:-D

I have a topper - bought it in rosebys i think. Hard to get used to and I find its very warm but its quite snuggly and was cheaper that a new mattress although after trying lots of matresses in several stores I think im really quite pleased i still have the bit of f'lex 'rather than the total 'sink in'
