I've googled the board and there's not much info about, the most useful of which is pdfs in german.

I think your best bet now is to do as shanecr suggests and email medion and ask them if you can have more than 512mb, it may be that you can't or you may need a bios update to do it.

Edit a bios update should not be attempted if you don't know what you are doing

Something is fishy here - a Pentium 1.7Ghz is a Willamette (first generation P4), these never supported DDR ram? This is going back a while, fairly sure though that the 1.7Ghz was never offered as a Northwood which did support DDR ram. I'm also puzzled that if Crucial reckoned you had PC2700 (DDR333) ram in there, why they said they couldn't sell ram to you as they do stock this type of memory.

I'm afraid I need to make another software recommendation, a small one called CPU-Z:

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

I always recommend this for ram upgrades as it's very small, simple and tells you exactly what ram you have and in what configuration. Many other suites tell you so much information you just don't need to know.

Hi john

Looked more into this and it has a Pentium M 735 and has 2x256mb pc2700 so-dimms filling both slots.

Think you missed that it was a mobile and not a desktop, but on the desktop front you are spot on.

No, I did know it was a laptop but for some daft reason I read it as Pentium4 not Pentium-m - entirely forgot the first ones were 1.7Ghz rather than the later 1.73Ghz of the later variants. Thinking it through more now, there never were Willamettes in notebooks either which makes me even more wrong.. It makes more sense now, Crucial are saying they can't sell ram for it because it's already at the max. I don't think that's accurate though as I don't remember any of the P-m chipsets being that limited.

Dont think they ever did a bios upgrade for this model. As the intergrated graphics also eats 64mb of it not sure there is much that can be done.

All I can recommend is you go to a computer fair and take it to one of the upgrade stalls and ask him to try a 512mb pc2700 so-dimm then boot it up to test it.(so make sure the battery is charged)
If it does work he will prob part ex your 256mb so should be better off and if not he put you 256mb back for you and you find out and costs you nothing.
