Could anyone assist me in choosing a memory stick to buy online for my pc. I dont know much about these, have never bought one but my pc is really playing up and im thinking im going to have to either buy a new one or restore to factory settings. I think the problem with it is not enough RAM... but thinking if i clear it first then that would be a good start?

I have important files and loads of pics that id like to put onto a memory stick just incase,

Have seen this one on the WHsmith site, is it any good? http://www.whsmith.co.uk/CatalogAndSearch/ProductDetails-Verbatim+Store+n+Go+2+GB+USB+Drive+Pink-33353951.html
Doesnt need to be pink btw, any colour will do lol.

Thank you all x

what about an external hard drive?

http://hotukdeals.com/item/340140/maxtor-one-touch-4-500gb-external-h/

500GB for £45.99, should be able to store all your things on that
check how much ram you currently have:

Ram and hard drive storage are two completely different things and you seem to be getting these mixed up.

What exactly is the problem?
What machine do you have and what are the specifications? (Ram, Procesor speed etc?)

I just did that thing which deadduck kindly sent to find out my comp specs... the problem is that my pc is running really slowly at times and at 12am if your online it just stops working, like it would take u half an hour to open a new browser page but I think it goes back to normal if u re start... its weird.... i think it def needs a good clearout. My dad had a look at it for me and says it needs RAM as the ram is really small even for XP to be running on it. As u can see im not too great with this, I know how to work the comp but dont know nothing about the maintaining or anything of it!!

This is the data from that site: (I dont eally know what much of it means :( )

Maximum Memory Capacity: 2097152 MB
Currently Installed Memory: 256 MB
Available Memory Slots: 1
Number of Banks: 2
Dual Channel Support: N.A.
CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel
CPU Family: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.80GHz Model 4, Stepping 9
CPU Speed: 2806 MHz

Well first you should back your data up anyway. What if you lost all thoughts photo's you would be gutted. So here is GB worth of free storage. Just choose the basic plan.

Next go to crucial and run the system scanner to see what ram your system uses then post the results here and we will find you some prices.

Not to be rude (and please dont take offence) but you seem to know little about computers, and therefore I would bet my life on the fact that your machine is clogged up with spyware / malware and other nasties that are running on your machine and slowing it down to a crawl whilst at the same time disabling certain programs from running properly.

You need to be looking at 1GB of Ram really for XP, yes it runs on 256MB and 512MB, but really 1GB is where it is at. For clarification, system memory (or RAM) is what the machine needs to open up several programs at once. If there are spyware / malware programs running on your machine these will use RAM memory that for example your browser may want to use and could be the cause of slow browsing amongst other things.

Just had a quick look on Ebay and this is what you are after...

Ebay item: 130291516625

You might be able to get it cheaper, but £20 delivered is a pretty decent deal to be honest.

Anyway, install that (its really easy to install, open the case locate the old memory, unclip it, place the new memory in - it only goes in one way so you cant get it wrong) and you are good to go.

After looking at the machine specs, I would take an informed guess that more memory will not cure the problem as such, but would suggest a complete clean of your machine.

NOW, if the machine is rife with spyware / malware, I am someone who strongly believes in the fact that a system restore is the easiest and quickest remedy (as in format the hard drive and reinstall windows / drivers / programs etc). Others may swear blind that a certain program will get rid og the programs, but to be honest the only way to clean any software related issue is to start a fresh.

Of course this would mean losing whatever you have on the computer so you would need to backup any important files, and it would also mean that you would need the original cds that came with it.

Hope that makes it a little clearer.

Adding 1GB will be plenty. PC3200 will work with your system and is a little cheaper than PC2700. This is £19.99 delivered and the cheapest I can find.

In the mean time you can do a little spring cleaning be using these tools to clean and defrag your system. Ccleaner and Defraggler
They are both easy to use.

As Simon says. If you have not been using any anti virus or spyware programs then a system restore is probably the best option. Upload all your important data up to Adrive.com (they virus/spyware check it for you) then do a system restore. For virus protection I recommend AVG or Avast and for spyware protection Spybot

Thank you both for replies, Simon, no offence taken :) I am a bit dumb when it comes to this but great at browsing and using programmes etc - I really should get myself clued up on this!!
I understand all that you have both said, I also spoke to my dad (whos gonna fit the ram for me) whos told me the same thing about XP needing more to run, why do they sell computers with so little ram in them with XP already installed in it!!! So annoying!!! I guess its to make money out of selling Ram etc!

I have defragmented recently, and as far as im away i dont have many programmes running such as spyware. I have been through all my programmes, cleaned it all up deleting things im not using... even did a decrapifier..... but the pc is just getting worse and worse so i know Ram should give it a good help.

I do intend to restart it all from fresh hense asking about a memory stick - i kinda knew what i was meaning but unable to describe and simplify it as you guys do :) Avg in use at the moment

Thank you very much for the links to ram, paying around £20 for that is a bargain really as it should all be well worth it. Im going buy the ram and a memory stick tonight and get this problem sorted. Ive decided to go for the memory stick rather than free online storage as i have a lot of accounting files and things that id rather not be anywhere on the www :)

Thanks again really really appreciate this rep added x

No worries.

If your only buying a memory stick for account files this will be fine and only £2. 1GB USB. Remember if your wanting one for storing your photos on too then you will probably need a larger one like an 8GB one.

thanks again Gavin, Ive bought an 8GB one from play (the scandisk one thats recommended on this site) I'll just pop everythign onto that and hope for the best :)
