Hey HUKDers I downloaded MSE yesterday as my Kaspersky ran out just wanted to know from the people who have been using it for a while how good it is? and is it better than AVG free or AVAST (free)?

I've been pleased with it as it's light on resources, doesn't nag you and appears to do a decent job of picking up and blocking malware.

Seems pretty good, been using it for about 6 months, after I installed it I ran a scan and it found some viri in java that AVG didn't find.

as good as anything free.
you cant complain when you havent paid

Agree with what as been said,it is easy and simple 2 use!
AVG does not even compare 2 it,and as been said is free, and since I have being using the last 6 months no probs!

Apart from when their system fails to start due to a virus and they need to pay someone to fix it. Free is not as free then.

I used M$ SE for a while on a couple of my computers and had no problem (other than on daughters laptop it did not behave as it should) but I know 3 other comps I put it on came back with viruses but god knows how some users manage to get infected (I'm sure plenty of them like to disable stuff without even knowing they have done it)

MSE is better than AVG...
I had trojans that AVG missed

I use both..... They seem to be compatable.... I run both scans together.. slows your machine down a bit but you can do it whilst you aren't using the machine

But I wouldn't have to pay someone because I'm not a fool.

If you say so.

Lots of computer users can not fix these sort of issues themselves.

Yeah, so probs with MSE.. has blocked a few things for me that others haven't. I also have threatfire for an extra level of protection against malware.... and other stuff that I can run if an infection gets through too... plus always handy to have a boot disc with AV apps etc in case you need it sometime.
Most importantly for me anyway is having add-ons for firefox that help stop unwanted stuff getting on the PC in the first place such as noscript, ref control, flash blocker etc etc

Running 2 AVs together is a no no.

I run 2 AVs together to scan the drives. Theres no problem at all.

Micorostf Security Essentials and AVG. Both scan my drives fine.

PC would run faster if you kicked AVG into touch though

They are only used to do a drive scan. My partner tells me that it doesn't slow down the computer.

so what do you use for 'real time' protection then?

For scanning drives, there are no issues with using more than one anti virus package. It is a misconception that using 2 anti virus packages is not advisable. The confusion lies in that running 2 (or more) realtime scanners concurrently is not advisable.

By all means continue with the drive scans using both packages as per normal. This applies for grimm6 too.

Agreed that of the 2 (Security Essentials and AVG real time scanners), I would switch off AVG's too. Security Essentials impressed reviewers immediately upon its launch.
