So my brakes have started making an awful noise when I use them heavily. Also as I took down the window to park I heard a metal noise coming from the wheel.

Like something was stuck and grinding against the wheel as it rotated. So I drove around the block and it's making that noise all the time. Going to book it into the garage. Although I have a good garage, still as a lone female who knows jack about cars, I'd rather have some idea that I may now what I am talking about!

Could the pads be worn down to the metal, when you say all the time do you mean even when not braking?
#2
Sounds like something in between the pad and disc then maybe.
#3
When were the pads last checked/chamged?
#4
If you are hearing grinding noises coming from the wheel it might be that you’re wheel bearing is on its way out
#5
Could be the brake disc has broke away so when you brake it grips the disc but doesn't rotate with the wheel. It does happen from experience of it happening.
Straight forward job if it is.... but, it will still be a sting to your purse.

What's that *whistles*

When the wheel bearing goes, you will usually hear a whining moan noise that will increase as you drive faster, and decrease as you slow down. If the noise is coming from the front, you can determine which wheel it is by steering the car left and right as you travel. Steering the car left causes the weight to shift to the opposite (right) side and vice versa. So if the noise gets louder when you turn right, the left side bearing is worn out...louder when you turn left, the right side is worn out.

Have you got alloy wheels to look at your brake discs without taking the wheels off?
#8
Do you not know anyone who could remove the wheel and have a quick look?

Or could you not jack it up yourself and just rotate the wheel to see if it occurrs then?

Pretty sure its your break pads, mine used to do that when I was turning. My pads were virtually on the metal.
#10
So you have front and rear discs, can you look between the spokes of the alloys and compare the brake pad.

Any of the Kwikfit type places doing free brake checks at the moment? At least the diagnosis would be free then.

Edit: checked online and Kwikfit is a free brake check.

Edit post #14 before the stalkers start updating their databases :D And stop hitting kerbs :p

Don't expect much honesty if you go to a place and say you want a brake check because you think the pads are worn :(
