missing folders on computer.......

I've just noticed that folders in "my documents" have nearly all vanished, not the folders themselves but what was in them. for example, i have a folder called my music and inside that folders, not they're all gone. same for other folders. i've done a system restore to yesterday when i know they were there and it didn't make a difference. no idea what's up, i couldn't have accidentally deleted them as they were all spread about in my documents. it included work and downloaded files, all very odd.
it's not life or death but i'd like them back, any help or explanations would be appreciated.
thanks.

have you tried doing a file search for the any of the files?
#2
i have. it all seems very random. i've checked other folders and some aren't missing so i really dont know what the deal is.

System restore wouldnt bring them back as it doesnt affect things like that. I assume you know the size of you hard drive and the size of you documents: do they matchas in, are the doxuments still taking up file size space on the drive? If so, they are prob just hidden. (i know a few virus' that do this) If not then you need to try a restorer (one I use is called restorer 2000 or sumet) and it will rpob find them.

Have you run a thorough error-checking scan on your C:\ Drive(or whatever drive the missing folders/files are on)?

no, i haven't keep a firm eye on file sizes to see if they are gone from the total of my hard drive space. Id' guess it was maybe 10 gigs worth of stuff i cant find any more.
thanks for the tip, i'll look into a restorer.

still wouldn't mind knowing how and why they've went missing. i've not done anything different, unless something i've just downloaded has a virus in with it.

yeah, i'm pretty good with backing up but some of the stuff i only saved last night, including work.

Have you tried turning on show hidden folders? It could be you've accidentally hidden them

Control Panel --> Folder Options --> View Tab --> Hidden Files and Folders

i assume you have checked the recycle bin and you are not confusing folders with the one.

I had vista point MY DOCUMENTS back to Allusers so thay looked to be missing.

run file scavenger on it
#12
just ran disc check which took an age.
files/folders aren't hidden, not in recycle bin, check all relevant folders/places, i think.
trying scavenger now.

thanks a lot for all the advice.
#13
ok, using file scavenger i think i can see them but cant access them and i cant recover using that program either.
anyone know of a free one i can use?

edit, i purchaed an album from hmv last week and deleted the program today, in the list on file scavenger i can see files grouped in and associated with hmv for some reason which they never were. i wonder if that has something to do with it.

Just wondering are your "My Documents" in the default place?

Just asking as my documents are on the E drive so after a clean install it looks the same in my documents but for me to be able to see everything i need to right click on the "My Documents" filder on the desktop and change the location from C drive to E drive and then you get your stuff back, could it be that?
#15
my documents are where they always were. nothing seems to have changed apart from the contents of my folders in my documents.
i'm trying to get them back via this restorer i'm using but it's only letting me get them one at a time and half of them seem corrupted, only trying .jpgs so far.
and since i dont know how it happened in the first place it may happen again.

whats this hmv program you removed?

sounds dubious.
#17
it does. when you buy an album from hmv you apparently need to use their downloader. amazon have one too. in theory it's legit but i remember doing that this morning and didn't realise i had stuff missing till around that time. could have even been before, bit of a coincidence though.

eff my socks ,it's done it again. it's definitely this hmv thing. i looked in my control panel add/remove programs and it was still there so i tried remove again. it's only gone and taken almost everything else with it. if it was in a folder in my documents it's gone. amazing!

edit, it's actually done a better job this time and just took whole folders, last time it only took folders inside of folders.

cack.

yeah - I thought it seemed a likely culprit.

I'd take this up with hmv as its a serious flaw :w00t:

hah, yeah, pretty decent flaw. not sure why it's took all that. it's a nightmare restoring each file. it seems to be corrupting some as well so i cant use them. if it doesn't recognise where it was originally it's not of much use.
