Does anyone know where I can get one for free? Not a trial one or a limited one.

Checked google but can't find one.

Please?

The one I use almost every day for doing exactly what you want is mediacoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/download.htm). It is completely free and is without doubt the best out there without having to pay a penny!!! It will pretty much convert anything to anything.

The good thing with it is, if you're not very good with these pieces of software, it has a really easy setup wizard that takes you step by step through setting it up to exact what you want.

Download it and give it a try, I know you won't be disappointed.

tip:

If you want to convert MKV's to an Xbox 360 compatible MP4 file without losing any quality then use this converter:

Have you given Mediacoder a try yet? With not having a PS3 I can't try it for you first, but I have no problems reading in HD *.mkv files and converting them into pretty much anything I wan't including Xvid, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264, Theora, FLV, Dirac, WMV, Real, H.263, H.263+, DV Video, Motion JPEG and AMV. Most of these I've never had to convert. It can put them in the following containers, MKV, AVI, Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg2 TS, FLV, 3GP, 3GP2, MOV, OGG, MJpeg and more.

I've been through quite alot of the so-called retail converters and they're all pants compared to Mediacoder.

I'm using it as we speak, converting a 706mb WMV film to MKV to reduce the size.

Why would you download an MKV file then convert to AVI?

You'd want to do that if your media player can't take MKV files, like a lot of the cheaper media players. I've done it in the past before I got my eGreat player.

I understand that but why not just download an AVI file, would be alot quicker as there mostly only 700mb and MKV`s are 1.95GB.(for tv shows) 4.5GB+ for movies.

I think this is a case of horses for courses. We all try different software and get used to one particular one and tend to stay with it. My version of mkv2vob has just updated itself and I've just run it on Beowulf mkv and it came out great. The software I use (Mediacoder) would do the same job, so I'll tend to stay with it. They're both FREE, so I would say try both and make your own judgement.

Maybe he doesn't download the films himself and can only get them off someone with mkv's!!
