Mobile Internet for my laptop for cheap - anyone?

I want to use my laptop for internet use while out and about and wanted to know the cheapest way to do this?

I was thinking of getting the 3 mobile modem via my sister who has a contract with them which looks like it will be on a new 18 month contract at £5 per month with free dongle so total £90 for 18 months surfing up to 1gb/month ...

But I know I wont be using it loads so was wondering what other options I have ( I know £5 per month isn't much - but still)

Can I connect the lappy to a mobile and use a pay as you go sim to surf with a network that offers a good internet add on?
If so what mobile and network do you recommend?

Any help welcomed!

Unless they have extended that offer, you are too late! (It was supposed to end 31-5-08)

But its by far the cheapest deal out there! I was going to take the 3GB £7.50 version - but didnt want 3 as my phone provider.

I was on T-Mobile with their web n walk bolt on and used my HTC phone to connect to my laptop. (You are not supposed to do this - but seemed to be OK). I changed providers to O2 from Friday - and use their free internet bolt on. Its only 200MB though - which I have a sneaky feeling Im gonna bust!!!!

There are PAYG options - but they will all work out dearer than what youve quoted!

Cheers Guv

I would prefer to go on Pay as you Go to avoid going over my limit and being charged but seeing as the dongle is £49.99 and an extra £10.00 for credit on PAYG and free on contract for £30 more I'd get 18 months surfing so bit of a no brainer I guess

Will have to be careful not to exceed 1GB per month.

Is there anyway to monitor my useage other then through 3?

edit - Just checked and offer extended to 30th June

Yeh, that I was thinking! Why pay a tenner on PAYG when its a fiver for the same!

I beleive there is software with the device that shows what you have used. Best to keep an eye on it. The charges for going over are rediculous!

I've downloaded BitMeter2 to monitor my useage
seems really good - you can set your ISP's monthy limit and get it to alert you when you get near your monthly allowance.
Also gives you loads of info like speed and upload and download useage,

Unless your holiday is in the UK, don't do it! Will cost you a fortune!

Someone was on Watchdog after using the internet abroad with thousands of pounds were of usage.
