Mobile phone advice needed

Ok, I have got a couple of questions that I am hoping someone can help me with. I am useless when it comes to this sort of thing.

Mum got a new mobile phone for her birthday yesterday, which is locked to Orange. Her old provider is O2. She has quite a bit of credit left on her O2 sim card.

1) When you get the number transferred to another provider, what happens to the other sim (e.g. is a new number assigned to it by O2, or is it just useless)

2) Could we transfer the credit from O2 sim to another O2 sim (I am on O2) before moving the number over to Orange - if yes, how?

I think thats it for now, thanks in advance for any help offered

1) the old sims dies and is of no use, cut it in half and bit it.

2) Most networks will allow you to transfer credit (but it is down to the network).
Call the CS number with the owners of both sims there, you clear your security check, tell them you want to transfer the credit from the number you're moving and give them the other number.
The owner of that number has to do a security check (to make sure no one's pulling a fast one and moving credit without the owner permission).
They move the credit, done. . .
