If a game sells and makes them millions, why wouldnt they launch a sequel each year?

Because eventually the only games u will have will be call of duty or whatever franchise that survives, as they won't bother making anything else, games used to be an artform, all they do now is re-release the same crap using the same game engine with a different name and then charge u another 40 quid for it....

What did you find to dislike about "Call of Duty 3"?

I prefer the earlier, bygone war period, instalments in the franchise (prior to "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare") to the recent titles because of the opportunity to learn about the historical significance of the battles being simulated as the game progresses.

When playing "Call of Duty: World at War", one of my kids asked why you could not play "as the Brits". I had to explain that the war in the title of the game was between the US, Japan, Russia & Germany. The “FIFA & PES generation” seem to expect you can just change history by selecting a different country to start the new game with.

If our educational establishments are not enforcing world history, I feel video games (especially the "Call of Duty" titles) that include archive footage are (and will continue to be) an excellent introduction to events that today’s “East Angular… is that in North Africa?” younger student population do not appreciate nor are aware of.

This new "Call of Duty" title will sell, of course, & surpass previous sales figures just by the nature of what it is & the attraction to the online multiplayer elements. However, I suspect yet another year will go by where the opportunity to reflect on the past will be missed ("War... What is it good for? Raising awareness?")

I love the way people who buy Apple products are branded 'sheep' by people who buy COD/FIFA/PES every year. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

As long as the multiplayer doesn't require a subscription to play, I'll be buying it - looks good so far.

In response to FPs post above, I prefer the modern shooters rather than "older/historical wars", much more enjoyable in my opinion.

Neither are Apple products.

The components come from all over the place. The 'publisher' remains the same. Apple/Activision.

COD does not sell because they are published by Activision.

I love it when an analogy is scrutinised rather than the point being made.

I'd say that one of the finest moments of 'videogames as art' came on the first Modern Warfare game when the helicopter is caught in the nuclear explosion.

That sequence where you play as the soldier dying is one of the most remarkable things I've ever played. Truly harrowing.

As for your pessimism, wasn't LA Noire the fastest-selling new IP ever?

I'm still convinced it's going to set a record for the 'most traded-in game within the first two weeks of being on sale' ever

No, but other Activision games will sell more because of the success of the COD series.
#24
this game is going to break all sorts of records on the day of release

Graphics are starting to look outdated now compared to new games i.e. Battlefield 3 - they should really invest their resources into a new engine for the COD after MW3. I seriously hope Battlefield 3 looks miles better than this even on the consoles otherwise the developers will have little incentive to upgrade the engine and we are left with a game that looks pretty similar to the now almost four year old COD MW.

Also it seems theres gonna be alot more "on rail" shooting sections with the player in a plane/car/helicopter in the single player.

I couldn't name one other game published by Activision.

I am a "normal" gamer.
I doubt any of the people on my friends list on my PS3 would name another game by Activision either.

I only have one Apple product(years old 160Gb ipod classic), but could name more or less every Apple product in their line up.

People tend to buy COD every year, as it delivers consistantly(not because it's by Activision). I'm not even sure why you bought Apple into the equation tbh.

So you and your friends have never heard of:

Guitar Hero (Entire Series)
DJ Hero 1+2
Singularity
Blur
Prototype
Transformers: War for Cybertron
Doom 3?

well, dont think anyone has seen console footage of BF3, it it the PC version that is doing the rounds and the boss of Dice has already said that Frostbite 2 is maxing out the console versions.
thing about this footage is that it looks mostly like cut scenes and didn't most people like every year get caught up in the hype.
i will not buy this game, i hate the mp of cod but i do like the mw campaign.

not my cup of tea anymore, just meh

Not sure if serious?

My point made throughout is that people don't buy Call of Duty by the millions because it is published by Activision. It sells because it is what people want.

If they want something different they can download a demo, like it, and purchase that too.

I have COD, Battlefield, Gears and Killzone etc etc.

I have a few of the games you quoted, which proves my point.

Not sure by the end if you were making a different point or enforcing mine, LA Noire is selling fast because gamers are desperate for something a little different, sadly though as pointed out, it's just GTA with a facelift. But I like the idea of the game nonetheless, but doesn't mean i wanna see an LA Noire tetralogy.
