A pet monkey reportedly assaulted a schoolgirl, leading her family to seek revenge in a deadly revenge attack that has left 20 people dead and 50 wounded in Libya.
Violence erupted between two tribes after the animal, that belonged to a shopkeeper from the Gaddadfa tribe, was set loose on a bunch of high school girls who were passing by in Sabha, local reports said.
The monkey reportedly pulled off one of the girls' head scarves last Tuesday, which lead men from the Awlad Suleiman tribe to retaliate.
The animal and three men from the Gaddadfa tribe were killed in initial clashes. This led to a further four days of violent confrontations between the rival clans, Reuters reported.
Tanks, rockets, mortars and other heavy weapons were used in the fighting that killed 20 people and wounded 50, CNN reported.
City officials could not be reached to confirm the accounts.
"There was an escalation on the second and third days with the use of tanks, mortars and other heavy weapons," the resident anonymously told Reuters.
"There are still sporadic clashes and life is completely shut down in the areas where there has been fighting."
Like other parts of Libya, Sabha has been periodically plagued by conflict since the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi five years ago splintered the country into several warring factions.https://au.news.yahoo.com/a/33286338/sabha-clan-clashes-monkey-attack-on-schoolgirl-sparks-deadly-clashes-between-rivals-in-libya/#page1
