You need a provisional license, apply at the DVLA. I think you must take the CBT test before you are allowed on the road, and then you will be able to ride up to 125cc bikes on a L-Plate

thats wrong mate at 16 he will be able to ride a 50cc moped and at 17 up to a 125cc

50cc – 50cc mopeds are restricted to 30 miles per hour. This is ideal for short journeys, nipping around town, getting into central London and if you want to take a passenger. The minimum age requirement is 16.

125cc - If you’re an advanced rider or need to go on roads above 30mph, such as A-roads, a 125cc moped is more suitable although you can’t take passengers. They are not restricted and can reach 65mph. You need to be 17 to ride one.

By the looks of it at 16 you can drive a 50cc bike providing you have a Provisional Licence, at 17 the rules change.

Mopeds are like ugly girls....fun to ride, but you wouldn't want to be seen on one by your mates! (sorry, just off to the sexist corner) s******

your moped at 16, should not go faster than 30mph. no very trendy, wait until 17 get a 125, some nice new ones out at the moment.

Don't buy the cheapest. Buy something decent about 3-4 years old and you can make all or most of your money back when you sell it to a 15 year old that will want it when you are finished with it. Buying cheap isn't always the best way. Use your vehicle as an investment and besides youcan try to look less unstylish with a decent bike.

As soon as you are 16 apply for a Provisional License then you will need to complete your CBT. With this you will be able to ride a 50cc moped with an L plate, but not carry a passenger. The next progressive and sensible thing to do after that would be to take the restricted license

There are quite a few good / reliable moped brands to look at, you need to visit a few dealers even if you want to buy provately. The more people you talk - in the business- the more advice you will get, better informed decision you will take.

Gilera, Malagutti, Peugeot, Piaggio, Aprilia, Yamaha are a few good one, dont be tempted to get a cheap Chinese import and put your life at risk!

can i apply for my Provisional License when im 15 or do i have to be 16?

you can apply for a provisional liscence and get one when you are 15 but it will have a date on it when it is valid from (your 16th birthday), and you then need a CBT certificate from doing you CBT test. I found my DNA on auto trader and went to buy it. It was £1299 second ahnd but from a dealer in good condition withh 3000 miles. I love it tho...adn yes when you are 16 you can ride it after your cbt etc
how about a geared 50cc? They look nice but I dont see the point in gears on a 50

Aprilia do one as well, the RS 50:

With regards to these 50cc pseudo motorbikes, personally I wouldn't bother. You'll pay well over the odds compared to a 50cc scooter (at least double I'd imagine), and in a years time you'll want something better anyway. Plus you're not going to fool anyone into thinking you're riding anything but a moped, because they sound identical.

Just go for a cheap scooter, if you feel you need to go faster than 30mph then get it derestricted. I used to have an old Vespa that did 40mph quite comfortably.
#22
I had a Derbi Predator (moped, de-restricted) it did 55mph with me on it @ 15 stone! Was also good on fuel. Having a family forced sale.

You could have a look at some of the cheap (v cheap) Chinese bikes. Down side is they have a very poor reputation.....

at a shop/dealer...you are gonna pay a bit extra but can rely omn service etc....privatley...its cheaper but no garuntee etc. I reckon £700-1000 wil lget you a decent second hand one
If you want like a standar moped...Try the Piaggio Typhoon, Piaggio NRG, Gilera Runner etc

Relax? Perhaps you shouldn't buy a moped at all
a bike accident at 40mph (and less) can KILL you or worse leave you crippled for life! I cant believe you said that, you need to respect any vehicle you are in charge of and be responsible because is not just your life you are "playing" with but also other innocents drivers or pedestrians :x

Very true especially as at 16 no-one has car experience on the road.

While I appreciate what you are looking for, I'd just stick with a standard moped - get a reasonable secondhand one and you can sell it on for little loss next year to get your 125.

I said they had a poor reputation - I didn't say they were dangerous. You should always do a quick check of any bike before every ride and if you buy the bike from a dealer that does a proper pre-delivery check this will reduce any risk.

There are many real life bikers out there where value for money is an important factor and a bike is more than a toy or trophy.....

You didnt, I said that they are dangerous
I am not talking about a well known/realiable/estabilished dealer approved bike. I am referring to those cheap chinese imports for which a quick check would not do anything to reduce the risks associated with its very poor built quality/specs/parts.....
Besides again these chinese bikes will have an extremely low resale value _if you do manage to sell it, which if I am not mistaken would not appeal the OP as he is looking to sell the bike after a year.

The best advice I can give is research, research, research

SHame your not 17, you could have bought my Honda NSR 125 as i'm looking to sell :giggle:

Only if you get caught!:whistling:

Come on guys, why would anyone want to ride a legal 50cc moped restricted to 30 mph. Teenagers since 1977 have derestricting 50cc moped for that extra few mph! Anybody else have a Yamaha FS1E (or Fizzy as we called em), drop the bars, fit the racing seat, a decent set of expansion pipes and away you go to 2 wheel paradise. A full 5bhp and 40 mph, in Yamaha racing colours, I was Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts, Giacomo D'Agostini all rolled into one! I moved on to Kawasaki AR125, Yamaha RD350LC (the real bad boys bike), Kawasaki KR1S, GPZ900, Suzuki GSXR750, Honda Fireblade and various other sensible and stupid bikes.

And 30 years down the line I still have illegal race can, dark visor, small number plate and bad attitude. I can just afford bigger, better and faster bikes. Biking, I just love it!
