Moral Dilemma - Possible Stolen Watch

I come to the good people of HotUKDeals looking for guidance on a bit of a moral dilemma.....

I've lost/somebody stole my watch. My last memory of it was taking it off at work around 4 weeks ago and leaving it on my desk. Now because I've left high value items on my desk before I didn't really believe that it was stolen by collegues/cleaners who-ever. But since then I have looked absolutley everywhere for it.

I've turned my house upside down, check my car, friends cars, friends houses, checked with my offices security to see if anybody has handed it in. Can't find it anywhere!

So here lies my moral dilemma, in order to claim my watch back on insurance I need to get a crime no, and although this is a simple process (just an online form to fill in), I feel guilty about doing this, as I'm not 100% certain it was stolen.

Thoughts, opinions? Help!

If you tell them you left it unsecure on your desk, they wont pay out anyway. I guess you're now faced with anather moral dilema..... Should I also commit fraud when reporting to the police and insurance company.

My advice id yes..... But yhe decision is yours to make.

I thought you had to go to the police station in order to get a crime reference number?

Also, wouldn’t part of the form/questions asked be what date was the item stolen and then you’d be questioned as to why you’ve waited 4 weeks to report a crime?

How expensive was your watch?

My local police seem to like it online, don't know if thats the same for the rest of England: http://www.wiltshire.police.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94&Itemid=536

Tbh the watch wasn't that expensive, £89.99 from h samual but you can get it online for £59 or so. It's just the thought that some little blighter could of knicked my watch and I'm the one that has to pay.

But then there is the other thought... that I lost it somewhere and I'm making false allogations,

Your insurance excess will cost more, don't bother claiming

It's insurance bought with the watch through H Samual, so there is no excess. They would of gave me a new one there and then if I had a police crime reference.

You can phone up and get a crime reference now !!.......You don't have to say it was 4 weeks ago, you can say it was yesterday!!......just claim it if you feel that you never claimed anything before. But don't use this as a excuse to claim if you keep losing things.......:)

Covers me for theft, bulglary, damage.

Tbh I think my conscience will get the better of me on this one, and I'll end up buying the watch again. It's only £59, and it just wouldn't feel right to fiddle the system.

Thanks for the advice though people, as always, you're a fountain of knowledge. (some useful, some not so useful) :-) Cheers

if u got insurance with 0 excess and u cant find it but rmbr leaving it on the desk then its logical to think its been stolen.... so report it and claim away.

but seriously dont bother with cack insurance policies for small items in future..not worth it imo.
