have you got C cleaner?

it may be some old files left on your pc stopping the new ones being installed properly
C cleaner or Cr...ap cleaner will get rid of them for you

available at download.com

if you have another pc download it on that and save to a disc and pop on your lappy ... run the cleaner and try instaling again

uumm you might be in trouble here, pre xp(SP1) usb device were a ****** to rectify mistakes on, generally speaking you are supposed to install the software before plugging device in.
As win2k has no system restore you could try getting safe mode menu up and using "boot with last known good config" but if you have rebooted this won't help
Do you have another usb adapter you can try and do sw/1st on?
If above don't work right click on entry in device manager/uninstall/remove device/reboot and install software first before plugging unit in.
Also check win2k has all(as many as you can) service packs installed before trying install

i know its really strange i got the starter set which is DIR - 301 with the usb DWA-111

on the side of the box it says :

DIR-301 wireless g router

DWA-111 wireless usb 2.0 adapter

but on the front of the box it says DKT - 110 wireless g starter kit

ok its listed as the kit model, and good news is it does support windows 2000 but states it must be
"service pack 4", right click on my computer icon and select properties from menu, you should see the service pack listed on that page.
if its not sp4 uninstall driver remove adapter and get sp4 before you attempt again

when i look on the wesite it looks like this one DWA-140 just has a dark coloured lid rather than the light grey
